**THE RECORDING OF A CEMETERY
BY THELMA GREENE REAGAN (via Alice Huitt Preston)

Today we walked where others walked
On a lonely, windswept hill;
Today we talked where others cried
For loved ones whose lives are stilled.

Today our hearts were touched
By graves of tiny babies;
Snatched from the arms of loving kin,
In the heartbreak of the ages.

Today we saw where the grandparents lay
In the last sleep of their time;
Lying under the trees and clouds -
Their beds kissed by the sun and wind.

Today we wondered about an unmarked spot;
Who lies beneath this hollowed ground?
Was it a babe, child, young or old?
No indication could be found.

Today we saw where Mom and Dad lay.
We had been here once before
On a day we'd all like to forget,
But will remember forever more.

Today we recorded for kith and kin
The graves of ancestors past;
To be preserved for generations hence,
A record we hope will last.

Cherish it, my friend; preserve it, my friend,
For stones sometimes crumble to dust
And generations of folks yet to come
Will be grateful for your trust.

Jesse Miller Mccollum (1811)
Davis, I am having great luck finding Jesse's records on ancestry.com.(10 so far and still adding). I think (?) I have found his military record. Any chance you know what regiment he was in. Thanks, Jill

RE: George Felton McCollum
I keep running into conflicting information. David's middle name could be different, with initial "I".

I found Luda's obituary and it says she was born 15 May 1859.

It also says she was buried by her husband (who predeceased her by 11 years) in the Russell cemetery, but doesn't say what city. Having a difficult time finding the correct location.

RE: George Felton McCollum
This is what I've gleaned from census & other records on Ancestry, but can't vouch for absolute accuracy. For instance, Luda McCollum's death age is listed as 80, but if the birth month & year in the 1900 census is correct, she would have been 69 when she died. Needs more scrutiny.

Father:
David Washington McCollum
b. Nov 1860 Georgia
d. abt 1928

Mother:
Luda Louisiana Martin
b. May 1870 Georgia
d. 19 Dec 1939 Bartow Co, GA

Thomas Wells, Elizabeth Norton
They were married on Aug. 20, 1843 in Newton Co., GA. They had three children within the next four years of Thomas's life, plus caring for the children of Thomas's first marriage to Martha Ramsey.

Elizabeth married Jeremiah Huff in 1853 and had three more children.

RE: Yes!
Davis, happy to be able to help. I was pleasantly surprised when I found this grave as it is very nicely maintained. Obviously someone has put some time into "keeping" the site. There was fresh pine straw and the nice evergreen boxwood making it seem fresh and alive. I love to see maintained plots, ironically, I have elected to be cremated! But having spent much time in cemeteries....I would like to have a stone somewhere.

RE: Charles Higgason Anderson
That's great! Do you know if Thomas (Thompson) married a Sarah Coleman? I've found out what happened to the rest of William's children. Now, I'm trying to figure out the parents of Elizabeth Nixon (pretty sure it is Edward Nixon and Elizabeth ?) and Julia Puckett.

We have a White reunion in Oct.every year in Gordon Co., GA, not too far from where William White is buried in Villanow, GA. We would love to have you.

RE: Photo of 1910 Old Soldiers Reunion
Thanks for your reply. The photo I was referring to was on the memorial of Sgt Oscar Benson Find a grave memorial #14876206 but I would be very interested in seeing the others too. I have created a virtual cemetery for the men of the 16th Georgia Volunteers and have so far located and linked nearly 450 memorials of men who served in the 16th GA. Any idea if any of the men in the pictures served in the 16th?
