 | Thomas Green Potter Hello!
Thank you for creating a Find A Grave page for my GGG Grandfather, Thomas Green Potter (Memorial# 28806187).
His middle name, "Green", by the way, is from his mother, Jemima Green. He was born in 1775, in Virginia. His wife, Elizabeth Holland Potter, died 18 years before him. She is buried in the same cemetery. You can link their Find A Grave pages - her memorial is #28806210. Her brother Thomas Holland is also in the cemetery, #28806278.
Here is Thomas Green Potter's obituary, from "The Southern Christian Advocate," Spartanburg, Spartanburg County, South Carolina, 12 March 1852:
"Died in Laurens district, 12th February, 1852, Thomas G. Potter, inthe 77th year of his age. The deceased was a native of Virginia, and removed, in early life, to Carolina, being mostly in Spartanburg and Laurens. For a period of forty years he was an exemplary member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. He was useful as a class leader in the neighborhood where he lived, and was found faithful till incapacitated by disease. In the course of a protracted pilgrimage he happily illustrated the spirit of the apostolic precept: "Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord." Death came by slow gradations, but found him at his post. Gathering his children around him, he gave them his last monitions and prayer; breathed a fervent petition for the church with which he was so long identified; lingered awhile upon the shore of mortality; and calmly passed away to his reward on high. In his removal, society has lost a good citizen, his children an affectionate father, the church a faithful member; but heaven has gained another saint to swell its anthem.
SACRED to the memory of THOMAS G. POTTER who died on the 12th Feb A.D. 1852 aged about 77 years.
Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord, for they cease from their labors and their works do follow them.
Remember old and young as you pass by-- As you are now, so once was I, As I am now, so you wilst be Prepare for death, and follow me."

 | Thanks for the memorials you have created Paul, Karen, & Katherine,
I am grateful for your efforts to provide information and photos on Find a Grave. Your posting of the information for James R Godfrey helped me put the puzzle pieces together and solve a family mystery. His daughter, Maggie, was born in 1860. Her twin sister and her mother, Sophia, died shortly after birth. I spoke with some of my father's cousins in the 1980s and none of Maggie's living descendants knew anything of her father or mother. They knew Maggie had other siblings, and named them. After recently coming upon my notes from that time, I was able to look up the siblings and find James on Find a Grave. After finding him, I was able to find Maggie's mother and sister as well. The twin sister had 1 days difference between her birth date and Maggie's. I also found in the 1860 Census Mortality Schedule that Sophia died of typhoid fever. Using sibling death certificates and the information on here, I discovered that James had 3 wives, 2 of which died around the time of a childbirth.
Thanks again for all you do.
God bless,
