Bio Photo One quick note: I am happy to transfer the management of pretty much any grave I've added to Find a Grave, other than my immediate family. Please feel welcome to ask!

Genealogy interests have been passed down to me from my great-grandfather and grandfather, who kept a family scrapbook of newspaper articles, obituaries, and events in the family along with some photos from the late 1800s forward. My mother then took over the scrapbook and passed it to me. The Internet has been a huge boon to all of us looking for our ancestors. Yet there is nothing like viewing a death certificate to go back a generation, when parents' names are recorded. Likewise, the photo of gravestones can break through genealogy blocks and have for me several times.

I make charts for my friends and family and have been intrigued by the unique view of history they portray. I've researched about 80 family lines so far and love doing it. The form I use is unique, as my friends have asked to see their direct ancestors all on a continuous sheet. One French-Canadian line is 8' wide. It required a lot of deep breaths on my part, when I was feeling overwhelmed.

I feel as though we take back our family members when we discover the names of those who preceded us. These connections are precious. I have used the National Geographic's Genographic Project to understand where my earliest ancestors went, which left me at the point in time of 5,500 years ago.

To me the Genographic Project and genealogy research show that we are all cousins of some level to every human on the planet and that we are each utterly unique individuals.

In short, I love this stuff!

Zephaniah and Hannah Smith gravestone photos
Hello Noreen,

I am researching a book on descendants of Justus and Lois Munn Hickok, which includes Abigail Hicock who married Zephaniah Smith.

I would like permission to use the photos you took of Zephaniah and Abigail's gravestones if I decide to put them in the book. I always credit my sources. I hope to hear from you.

RE: Point o' Woods aka Champion No. 1

You created a memorial with a headstone photo of Daniel S. Champion. He is in Champion #2 per the Hale list. I created a entry for him just to add the Champion #2 cemetery which I will delete when the creator of the original memorial transfers her's to that cemetery. Is he really in #2 which is very close to #1 AKA Point o' Woods or in your cemetery? More to untangle. If you email me at, I can email you the Champion #2 listings that were all added to the Black Hall School House Cemetery.

Will do. Better to straighten out now then have someone else reinvent the wheel later. I just created a Champion Cemetery #2.

Point o' Woods aka Champion No. 1

I now have a full printout of the Charles R. Hale Connecticut Headstone Inscriptions for Point o' Woods AKA Champion Cemetery No. 1. You have already created memorials for the majority of them. I also obtained printouts of both the Black Hall School House Cemetery and Champion Cemetery No. 2. The map of all the Old Lyme Cemeteries shows the Champion Cemetery No. 2 as very close to Point o' Woods AKA Champion Cemetery No. 1. The Black Hall School House Cemetery is West of both Champion cemeteries and near the Black Hall River. A review of the findagrave listings for the Cemetery listed as Black Hall School House AKA Champion found that the headstones for the Champion Cemetery No. 2 were also added to the
Black Hall School House cemetery. I will set up a cemetery on findagrave for Champion Cemetery No. 2 and get the right memorials transferred.

RE: Bertha Butler
Hi Noreen,

Thanks for letting me know! I've added the date of death for her.

RE: Ada
Yes, They are confusing as are my Darts and Daniels. Certainly many cousin marriages and first cousins are not unusual. Ada and Worthy probably didn't have a lengthy marriage as she died in 1890.I have many other family lines in Old Lyme Waterford, New London and in other towns in New London county. I always enjoy my day trips down there.

RE: Susan Miller Champion
You're doing good work down there. It is relaxing walking around a cemetery looking for your ancestors or someone elses. Happy Halloween

RE: Susan Miller Champion
Thanks Noreen. Are there many more headstones in the cemetery? I only have one page of the Hale Collection for that cemetery.

Susan Miller Champion

Please delete Susan Miller Champion and add your photo to the Susan Miller Champion Dart memorial. Although the headstone shows as Susan Miller Champion, she is the wife of Horace C. Dart and the findagrave convention is that she be listed as Susan Miller Champion Dart.

Best regards,

Keith Wilson

RE: Point of Woods Cemetery

I will attempt to add the note. My Hale collection printouts include p. 72 of Champion Cemetery No. 1 - not sure how many names were in the cemetery back then. There are 2 additional names on that page that don't have memorials. One is Joe Ward and the other is Eunice Jones. Should I add them or is that on your to do list? Ada R. Champion, wife of Worthy Champion, is the daughter of Edward Champion and Mary (Dart) Champion and the sister of Susan Miller (Champion) Dart. I have her death record abstract. The 8 memorials that I previously created have all been moved to the new cemetery name. Glad to do the research and find the most current answer.
