Bio and Links
Bio Photo I am a great great great granddaughter of John Burkhart who arrived at what is now Albany, OR in 1847. One of his sons, Leander Columbus Burkhart, was married to Melissa Ann Davidson of the Hezekiah & Melissa Davidson family of Polk County. They had traveled with the Burkharts to Oregon. Leander & Melissa had a daughter, Nellie Olivia Burkhart, who married & had a daughter named Pearl Laura Baker. Pearl fell in love with Harry Hoyt Taylor, a school mate. It was a match made in Heaven. They married & had 2 daughters; the older one, Helen, married a Hungarian doctor who had fled Hitler's madness; they lived & died in New York. The younger one, Patricia, was my mother. She is buried with her parents at the Multnomah Park Pioneer Cemetery in Portland, Oregon. I live in Southeast Portland, Oregon with my black cat, Shadow. I have an older sister living in Portland and a younger sister living in Corbett. My only son lives in Gresham. I also have a niece & married nephew living in the area & a niece, sister & brother-in-law living in California. I have been creating a Family Tree since mid-Oct. 2010; little did I know what I was getting in to. I was able to use many of my mother's old records from the 1960s-1980s, but have been so thankful for the age of computers & also for "Find A Grave", which has helped me sort out so many of my Burkhart, Ellis, Baltzell, Taylor, & Davidson relatives on my mother's side, mostly in Oregon, and my Webb, Gatlin, Warters, Uzzell & Lassiter relatives as well as all of the people they married on my father's side, mostly in Georgia & the Carolinas, and my son's father's family. I truly appreciate all of the time and effort all of you have spent creating this site; it's right up my alley as I enjoy sorting things out & solving puzzles, putting things in order, etc. I was a Social Services Worker for many yrs., but had to retire due to severe migraines; I now have problems with Reynaud's making my hands cold, pretty severe arthritis so I need to have both knees replaced & a right ankle I sprained for the 5th time in 8/2012. I've been told I have no tendons left which all explains why I am not as mobile as I used to be (and miss it!). I was hoping to get new knees last year, 2012, just in time for my 61st birthday, but some other issues arose. I've not been able to spend as much time on my family tree & memorials as I'd like, need about a week non stop to catch up. In the mean time, I spend what time I can researching & rediscovering my ancestors who came to Oregon (stopping along the way in VA., TN., MO., ILL., Iowa, TX & CA) in 1847 and settled portions of the Willamette Valley, Eastern Oregon and Southern Oregon. I also have a 1st cousin who was in Virginia who was helping me rediscover my father's side of the family, which I, sadly, know almost nothing about. He is now living in the San Diego area of CA. I need to get back in touch with him. He prefers hand written letters. I hope I'll hear back from him. I am finding, via Find A Grave, many more cousins throughout the United States, which is really exciting; I am still hoping to hear from my one remaining uncle in the mid West. I have recently found Jewish heritage under the names of Mayer, Freiburger & Huepfer going way back (to the mid 1600's)to when some family left Germany and ended up in Johnson Co., Georgia, America, among other places. I wish I knew more. In case you can't tell, I do tend to get side tracked frequently, especially when it comes to the graves of "little ones", Veterans & others without any flowers, & will leave flowers or an Angel for them, especially if they have none there, which I find incredibly sad. I ran into a Vietnam Vet at a grocery store last Summer who rides at funerals (The Patriot Guard). I actually was brave enough to go up to him and thank him & shake his hand; I told him about Find A Grave & gave him the web site address. I hope he looked us up! Thanks to all of you so much for all of your help as I am only human, am just striving to be better, One Day at a Time. When my computer was hacked July 2011, I missed Find A Grave the most! My phone system died (thank you Ma Bell) just before Mother's Day & I wasn't able to use either my telephone (just my cell) or my computer from May 11th until May 14th, 2012. I felt so badly about not being able to visit everyone on May 13th. I'm so glad my son's been calling me recently; has a new job that takes him out of the state alot. I also talk with my dad, who was in World War II, & is now 88, every week. I am so grateful he is still around. I have also heard from relatives whose family came to Oregon about the same time mine did and they settled not too far from where my family did. Talk About A Small World! May God take care of everyone. You are some very special people, as if you didn't know! I also use the familysearch.org site which can be very helpful.
***********Please keep sending up prayers for Jeannie who has recovered from surgery & returned to work. Thank you for all of your prayers for her. She is a very kind and gentle person. (See my messages)******Spend time with your loved ones while you have them. I spent time with my nephew and his bride and my younger sister on Christmas Eve. It was wonderful. Thank You Father. I have learned that my niece is engaged to a wonderful gentle man she has known & cared about for many years; I am so happy for them.
********My sponsor of almost 35 years has been in a nursing home with a fractured pelvis for almost a month now & her family has been reluctant to let me know of her condition, so I find myself just leaving a message every two weeks, asking for any information they are willing to give me & letting them know she is in my prayers. I miss her so very much..... we spoke almost nightly. My knee, ankle and foot problems continue to plague me so I have to rest an hour for about every hour I spend on line. I am totally frustrated, not always following my doctor's orders, but trying to. My new email address is working out much better although I am checking yahoo about once a week to deal with causes I believe in. Please use my gmail address from now on. Thank you so much. Take care and stay warm, preferably with someone you care about. Happy Spring!
With all sincerity, Kathie Lynn Webb Blair (and my black cat, Shadow), in Portland, Oregon, USA.

RE: Captain William Maxwell
Thanks Kathie ! Love Your Tribute - it is Perfect. This is what I emailed previously, but I think to the wrong person so here is what I found: I checked the 1920 census and discovered that William was born in Canada and immigrated in 1872 so he was not in the U.S. Civil War. The census occupation lists him as a MASTER PILOT on the Great Lakes which would definitely fit with our region as there are many former sailors in Marine City & Algonac.
If you also check the other census from 1880, 1900, etc., you will learn more. Each one has his parents of slightly different linage from Irish, Scotland, Canada . . .

Coincident
Things tend to happen to us all like that. I guess to remind us,"after all it's a small world."

It's good to hear of a man whom has photo's of his line going back a ways.

My Krauss side is German, name meaning, curly. So some say, I partly derive from someone with curly hair. Who knows?? My family is from Scotland, German, France, England and ect.... I'm a proud to be an American mutt. Though I do admit, that sometimes I wish I was from one. Part of my blood has been here since 1600's. Fought in just about all the wars.

By censuses, Henry J. Pollard is Courtney's husband. Sorry I am not a Pollard researcher. Old Praireville Cem. and Eolia Methodist are basically the same cem. They were abandoned. There aren't any cem. books that I know of. So I can't tell you if he's buried there also. Eolia Cem. is to the right of them. There is a Mary C. Pollard, Damron listed in Eolia Cem. The person whom added that memorial, if not just a Damron researcher, may have some info for you?? Good luck with your search!
