RE: Stiles Cemetery
Hi Helen,

I was so busy describing our adventure in the Stiles cemetery that I forgot to say you're welcome to use the photos on your family tree.

RE: Stiles Cemetery
Hi Helen,

Fay and I spent several hours at the Stiles cemetery yesterday, which as you may know is in a grove of trees and gets virtually no light. It was a pretty cloudy day and so the lighting was quite a problem. We spent a lot of time swatting mosquitoes as we waited for the clouds to pass and for the sun to move gradually so that it would filter down through spots in the heavy canopy of leaves. Then, when a shaft of sunlight appeared, Fay would use the mirror to shoot light onto the stones; and this worked quite well, even for stones that were in the deepest recesses of the grove.

Unfortunately, however, the stones that were most important to us - Gould Stiles, Delight Broughton, Anna Garfield and Alice (Stiles) Pember - were the most difficult to shoot, because, although they were in open areas in the grove, nevertheless the available light could not reach them and illuminate their inscriptions. So, finally Fay left the grove and went into the adjacent farm field to get direct sunlight that she could send up the hill to the grove. But even so the photos are barely respectable.

This is the sort of situation that must be photographed in the fall and winter when the trees are bare. Then there would be sufficient light to use the mirror effectively. But I'm in VT only during the summer, so we've got to work with the conditions that present themselves to us.

In any case, I much prefer small family cemeteries, like the Stiles burying ground, to large, relatively impersonal cemeteries. Not sure why, but I had plenty of energy yesterday, afternoon, despite the difficulties, that wasn't available to me in the morning in the Hillside Cemetery in Castleton. Go figure!

Again, thanks so much for your message.

Mt Pleasant Cemetery, Seattle
Hi, Helen. I see you have a couple of photo requests for this cemetery. I would be happy to take photos if you have the location of the graves within the cemetery. It is quite large and they apparently charge to look up the locations beyond the first request. Let me know. Sharon in Seattle

RE: Lena E. Powell
Thanks for your observation. I will try to find out if Mt. Sinai Lena is really there. I entered her as per Masing's records, but having no dates or any other info, while Riverview Lena does, leaves me to suspect maybe Mt Sinai Lena is in error. Lena and Eli's son Elias is at Mt. Sinai. I have the original burial permit book for Mt Sinai and although Elias is in there [1880] Lena is not[1932]. I have contacted a lady in TX who knows about Lena's mother and when I hear from her I will let you know. I am inclined to believe that she is not at Mt. Sinai.

RE: Lena E Warner Powell
Thanks for catching the Lena, that is buried at Mt. Sinai. The person that entered her is a friend of mine, I have contacted him to see what he has on her. I checked the plat book I have for River View, and it shows the Lena I have entered is buried beside her husband Eli.
