Bio and Links
Bio Photo I live in Oregon and started my genealogy hobby in 1976. That lasted for less than a year, and then I started again in the winter of 1998. I'm not a professional, but monitor, and have volunteered to answer some easy questions and requests for Multnomah County, Oregon, at RootsWeb.

"The Final Act Of Love Is To Remember."

Family surnames:
Direct Paternal: Fenter, Hardage (Arkansas, Oklahoma, Missouri), 1800's. Collateral Paternal: Allen, Bray, Cain, Doudy/Dawdy, Hardage, Hughes, Tanner.
Direct Maternal: Campbell, Steele (Kansas, Missouri, North & South Carolina, Pennsylvania), 1800's. Collateral Maternal: Anderson, Bailey, Chamberlin, Cook/Koch, Cordon, Drake, Duff, Hart, Hillhouse, Holmes, Montgomery, Myers, Stanley, Williams.

I try to use the best possible photo on memorials because I know how important it is to be able to read all the text on the marker.

Find A Grave allows 5 free spaces for photos on each memorial page, so I try not to upload more than 2-3 cemetery photos. If you need more room for photos, please contact me and ask me to remove a photo so you have more room.

My Photos: If anyone would like to use any of my grave marker photos, please contact me for permission.

Transfering Memorials: For those that are not of my family, please contact me, and include your member name & number, the name on the memorial and memorial number.

RE: Christian & Caroline Spaeth, 147614007, 47271774
Your research has yielded plenty of food for thought regarding the Spaeth family. It certainly underscores the fact that names, birth/death dates, and other personal statistics can become muddled over time, even when so-called "official" records are consulted. Add to this the often-overlooked practice of emigrants who make wholesale changes to their identities in the spirit of "starting over" in a new land, and the result can be chaos and confusion. Clearly, at some point a researcher must make a judgment call about these things based on the best information available, and this of course all but guarantees that some errors will creep into the compiled record. Historical/genealogical research will never be a precise science which leads to unimpeachable conclusions. It's a hard reality to accept for those of us who strive for order and precision in our work.

RE: Christian & Caroline Spaeth, 147614007, 47271774

I was only able to spend a brief time on the Spaeth genealogy, so, as sometimes happens, I relied on other researchers for the information I abstracted at Ancestry for Find A Grave purposes. In such cases I try to select information that appears sound and well-researched. As an experienced researcher yourself, I'm sure you know that ultimately it's a judgment call. As the old saying goes, we choose our battles. So it goes with Find A Grave research.

By the way, Christian Spaeth didn't die in Germany, as his relative claimed. He died in Portland on June 16, 1939 (I've sent you an edit request). I've added Christian and his wife, Caroline, to my list of death certificates to pull on my next visit to the state archives. If nothing more, they should at least fill in the missing birth/death dates.

Hi Jan:

That information was included in a family tree titled Andrews/Lorenz-Brown/Bostock Family and posted to the family tree section at It was compiled by Thomas Andrews, a family descendant. As with any information from Ancestry, its accuracy is subject to scrutiny; however, I took a close look at the other information in the tree and it appeared to be thoroughly researched and well-organized. There also were some terrific old photos attached to the lineage that would look great on the Find A Grave memorials. Ultimately, it was my judgment that the information seemed reliable. If you have Ancestry, take a look.

RE: Susan Florida Moody
Thanks. The birth record on Susan Lorence was a delayed birth registration that she did after she was married. It is listed in Ancestry and Family Search under the Oregon-easy database, from actual records.I believe it to be a good source for her parents full names.
Susan Lorence is deceased now,she passed in 2003 at the age of 105.If I could find her burial location I would be really happy!
Thank you for being thorough,I keep my research notes for occasions like this.
