Bio and Links
Bio Photo I am a long-time collector of vintage sports autographs, letters, and autographed sports graphic cartoons. My interest in sports autographs covers the golden era from the 1920s thru 1950s. Having corresponded with many old athletes, I have a natural interest in their lives--and deaths. Professionally I am a librarian in an historical archives in Salt Lake City and a historian.

Evar Swanson

Galesburg's adopted son Evar Swanson elaborated during a baseball discussion in 1972 why he entered a contest for "running the bases" while playing Major League Baseball for the Cincinnati Reds.

During games of a doubleheader on September 15, 1929, Swannie circled the 360-foot jaunt around the bases in 13.3 seconds. Although several have tried to excel the feat, the record still stands 83-years later.

Swannie pointed out that in the earlier days contests including foot races, fungo-hitting, homer hitting, bunting and catchers throwing into barrels were common. He admitted that, "although we participated for our pride, we also did it for the money. I made $75 for winning my base-running contest and that was pretty good money in those days. The most I ever made in one season playing professional baseball was $8,500 a season."

RE: Harry Craft
You are welcome, Mel. Thank you for setting up the page, and leaving such a lovely memorial with the Colt's insignia on it. I was touched to see that. Uncle Harry and Aunt Nell were a huge part of my life, and I spent a lot of time with them.

RE: Russell Mayo Lyon
Dear Sir. Thank you so very much for the photo of Russell Mayo Lyno. I will add it to my book.

My Father, Fletcher Adam Chaffin also played in our Mills Mill League in Woodruff, SC. I know everything in the world about him. I only have one picture of him and it was when he was a Mills Mill Miller player. Do you have any other pictures of him in his baseball uniform? Many thanks. Pam Foster
