Bio and Links
Bio Photo I will be happy to add additional information or make corrections to memorials I maintain. Please use the Edit tab on the memorial to send your info to me and I will update. I transfer all memorials within the four-generation rule. I do not link to "burial unknown" listings.

My added vs. managed memorials difference is quite large because I manage many memorials transferred to me from a now inactive member. I work on these daily to update with info and add photos.

Please do not copy my photos to other websites (including Ancestry) without my permission.

Samuel Slemmons Melvin
Thank you for the information regarding the duplicate memorials. I don't know how I missed the Springfield memorial -- spent a great deal of time sorting out the Melvin family a couple of years ago.

Most of the the Melvins are located in one plot at Mountain View Cemetery in Oakland, California. Plot was purchased when Samuel Houston Melvin's (friend of Lincoln) father James Melvin died. Another of SHM's sons was secretary of the cemetery, so they obtained a large view plot.

SHM and Amanda Slemmons Melvin's daughter Mary Lincoln Melvin was married to my husband's gg uncle, Archibald Dewing. Dewings also have a plot at Mountain View. Mary is there.

In 1908, Not only Samuel Slemmons Melvin, but a younger sister, who lived just a few weeks were moved to Oakland. Strangely I believe two little girls were left behind.

When I started working on the Melvins at Mountain View, found that when yet another son, Henry A. Melvin, Associate Justice of the California Supreme Court, died in 1920, the Elks Grand Lodge offered to donate a large marker - but only if all others were removed. Exactly what happened. Other of the family members' markers were junked. Only other marker on the lot is that of brother Charles Melvin -- a small. tasteful flat one on the edge of the lot. He died in 1911. It's entirely possible that his was removed as were the others, but because of his special relationship to the cemtery association, it was returned.

Mary Lincoln Melvin Dewing, who was held by Lincoln as as infant, was a popular member of her husband's family. Every child had to be rocked by "Aunt Molly," or at least held by her. The child could then say they'd sat on the knee of someone who sat on Lincoln's knee. My husband remembers being driven to visit her in Sacramento, when he was very young, likely so he could make the claim.

I've cribbed your newspaper obituary for SSM -- found another in another old paper, will compare them. Do hope you don't mind that I copied yours.

William Groves/Graves
Hi BjJ! I sent corrections for William Groves/Graves, and if you let me know it's been updated then I'll go ahead and delete what I added. Sorry about that - with the misspelling, I didn't notice another memorial in there. I was researching potential mother Ella Polk Taylor and it all looks like it would be a fit, but I'm not confident enough to add her as a link, so I put it in the bio area in case someone else can confirm. Curiosity... with so many under your responsibility, how did you notice that I'd added one?

Thanks for your work on this and the photo. I'm bummed that she has no stone, but I'm finding a lot of ancestors with no stone. I think this happens when the person is the last one living. There is no one left in the area to put a stone on them. (This was the reason for one of my Aunts.)

Anyway, thanks.

You are most welcome. It is funny that the last time I communicated with you is was about a Wheelock who was related to my neighbor, this time it is my extended family. Thanks you for the work that you do.
