Bio and Links
Bio Photo I am a native Californian. I went to school in Santa Rosa and married Vern Leete also from Santa Rosa. After being away for quite some time we returned to California and found the Santa Rosa Rural Cemetery in a mess. The weeds were thigh high because it had been abandoned. A group of teens from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints began rescuing the cemetery. Later that year the city included it in the "Hands Across the County" program. It took less then a year to give the cemetery the sense of dignity it deserved. Now it has natural beauty with its huge oaks and Vinca. Garbage was hauled away and gravel put on some of the graves. Walkways were cleared. Headstones were straightened and bleached. The pioneers of Santa Rosa are buried here and these young men and women understood the importance of honoring those that had established their fine city.

In 1986 a young man named Adrian Seeser chose to list all the names in this cemetery for his Eagle Scout award. With his permission those names have now been added to this site in hopes it will help anybody that has family or friends they could not locate before.

It has been an honor to be a part of the reconciliation of this graveyard. It gives me confidence in the youth of our town. My hope is that you as a searcher will find comfort in what you find.

In order to change a cemetery listing, you need to:

1) Click on EDIT next to "BURIAL:"
2) Choose "Cemetery Burial"
3) Type in the following in the appropriate field:
CEMETERY NAME: County of Sonoma Cemetery
COUNTRY: United States
STATE: California
4) Then click "Search for Cemetery"
5) Choose County of Sonoma Cemetery
6) Save changes

Give it a try to do it yourself that way you'll know how to do it in the future and if you have trouble after following my steps you can consider transferring it to me to do it and then I can transfer it back. :-)

Hi Jeanie,

His cemetery listing needs to be changed to County of Sonoma Cemetery, Santa Rosa, Sonoma, CA. That part of my edit update wasn't done when you added his bio that I submitted.
This is per Sandy Frary's records.

Much appreciated!

Andrew J. Sanford

I posted a correction to Andrew's grave site about his date of death, etc. My husband found his tombstone in Matanzas Creek and is going to put it back where it belongs in Moke Plot.

One of the Rural Cemetery historians found a newspaper article about his death, dated 1909. If you would like to have a copy of that, email me at It's quite interesting.

By the way, my husband, John is in charge of the cemetery's maintenance and occasionally gets calls from people who have actually found tombstones.

I just sent you an update to copy and paste into his bio which includes an explanation of why I just deleted my previous edit panels for birth and death data that I submitted to you a few days ago and sent you new ones just now.

There are some changes to his day of death and place of death, etc., based on Sandy looking at the death certificate again at my request. Also, please approve my edit for the marker transcription field. I think it makes it clearer.

Thanks! :)

P.S. If you could include a person's name in addition to the F/G # when you write me messages on here that would be helpful.

Santa Rosa Rural Cemetery
Jeanie, just a note to express my heartfelt thanks for your involvement with this cemetery. I recently learned that my great-great-great grandparents and many of their descendants are at the Santa Rosa Rural Cemetery. I only live one hour away and I drove over on Mother's Day to place flowers on several family plots.

My great-great-great grandparents' names are Martha Berry and David Curtis Clark. Their children who are in that cemetery are Nancy Clark Taylor, Margaret Clark Forsyth, and Mary Ellen Clark Carithers.

Nancy was married to John Shackelford Taylor who had the White Sulphur Hot Springs. Recently a large park was created out of his 1400 acres on the east side of Santa Rosa.

Mary Ellen and Margaret were married to David Noble Carithers and Benjamin Bryant Forsyth, who created the first big department store in Santa Rosa.

One of Martha Berry and David Clark's sons moved to Visalia, in the central valley. That was my great-great grandfather and I was born in that part of the state. Through my recent interest in and I learned about my relatives in the north bay.

Thank you again!

To find this family, you can go to Martha Berry Clark's memorial, 28601461

RE: Albert B. Cummings

It just occurrd to me by your last name Leete, that your husband might be a direct descendant of Pelatiah Leete, w/ the Cummings connection. If so, my site below has photos of Albert and his wife, his parents, her parents, news clippings, poetry written etc. Please let me know if this is a direct family connection.
