DJ "Dutch" Sayne
Well, I suppose my Ancestry ID is simply "Betty Sayne". I'm certain my husband is the g-g-grandson of John Sayne & Martha Slatery. Am I correct that John and Dutch were brothers?
Thanks again for your time.

RE: DJ
Hello, and thank you for your reply.
I share your assessment of researching the Sayne family. There are so many "John" Saynes in the mix that it is difficult to keep them straight. That is where I made my mistake. I have seen Dutch listed as John Daniel and Daniel John. I believed him to be my husband's g-g-grandfather. But I am really looking for the husband (John) of Martha Slatery. Do you have any info about him? Do you have a tree on Ancestry that I might review?
Thank you for your time & research.

DJ "Dutch" Sayne
Hello,
I'm wondering where you acquired your information on this person. Information available on Ancestry.com shows a different wife and family in the same time frame. I am looking for ancestors of James Roger Sayne (1862-1929). Ancestry shows James' parents to be John Daniel "Dutch" Sayne and Martha Ann Slatery. Any information you can provide is greatly appreciated.

Nancy Erwin Stewart
Actually Nancy was Jesse H. Douglas THIRD wife. He married Nancy's older sister Eliza Ann Stewart 27 Nov 1859 Ellis County TX. They are in Ellis Country in 1860..
She died.
He married Evaline Gail Manly 23 June 1863. Evaline died after birth of daughter Sarah. He married Nancy 12 Nov 1865.

After Ann Eliza Stewart Douglas died, Jesse married Evaline Gail Manly, who, in 1864, gave birth to a daughter, Sarah Gail Douglas. However Evaline Gail Douglas died shortly after giving birth to her baby and her husband, Jesse, having no way to care for the infant, told his mother to take the baby home with her and give her to his sisters, Lizzie and Sue. Since Sue already had several children of her own, Lizzie, who never married, took Sarah and raised her. ( I followed this through the census) Although Lizzie never legally adopted Sarah, Lizzie always regarded her as her own child and when Lizzie died left her property to Sarah. Jesse however was concerned for her welfare.

Paraphrased from "Sylvana' written by Elmo Douglas Headrick: "Jesse Douglas, while never having any part in raising his oldest daughter, Sarah, was always interested in her welfare and at one time bought 320 acres of land for Sarah. For this, he traded his noble animal, Nelly Capshaw. This fine blooded saddle mare had, in 1869, more corresponding value than the finest automobile today."
(Also from a letter from Jesse to his brother George Douglas telling about his buying this property.) " George, it is out of the question for me to move during Old Lady Stewart's lifetime. I think she would go crazy. She is old and frail in body and mind, but she may live longer than younger ones. I am not sure whether I will remain on this place next year or not -- a couple of months will decide that. PS. Eli weighs 32 lbs.-Earl is growing fine, stands his weight. Can almost sit alone." (Old lady Stewart may refer to Jesse's third wife Nancy Stewart.)
