Bio and Links
Bio Photo I retired as an elementary school principal in 2000. As a person that sleeps only 4 hours a night that leaves 20 hours to fill. Sitting home is not an option. Now, I drive a school bus 5 hours a day and visit cemeteries every chance I get. I have never been to a cemetery that charged admission and seldom is there a crowd. My wife, Sandra, is of a like mind so it works well. We both enjoy the hunt and the thrill that comes with each discovery. Let us know if we can help. If you have additional information on one of my post or you are a relative and want ownership, I will gladly transfer it to you. Just ask. Oh! By the way just call me Doc!
NOTE: Many times the family plot has names different from those on the headstone. I always attempt to provide a reference point for markers. Hope this is not confusing.

Two quotes worth remembering:

"Tread softly, dreams are buried here." Unknown

"If you wonder about your 'roots' you have two parents, four grandparents eight great-grandparents and 16 great-great-grandparents, and by the time you go back 10 generations 300 years or so- you had 1,024 people from whom you are directly descended. --Mady Castro

Loyd Franklin Black Family
I pulled up some information on your Loyd Black family and found it fascinating. My father also ran a filling station in Gastonia, NC, but in the 1950s and early 1960s called Hoffman's Service Station on Franklin Avenue in the area called "Greasy Corner." When I was working on the book, Gaston County, NC: A Brief History, in 2008, I visited Hollywood Cemetery quite a few times.
I find that we may have connections through my Dellingers (Indian Creek George), Cloningers, Sides, Cody, etc. as well as my husband's Black family. My husband descends from Thomas Black (1792-1880) of the Black and Neal families of Cherryville. The first Thomas Black (1741-1779) purchased 370 acres from Moses Moore 23 November 1762 and settled in the valley near Indian Creek. In 1765 he bought 320 acres lying on both sides of the Little Broad River in present-day Cleveland County, NC. His son, Ephraim Black, born in 1767, returned to the Indian Creek property and this would eventually become Cherryville, NC in Gaston County.
Most researchers in this area agree that Thomas Black was descended from Scots-Irish immigrants who settled in Pennsylvania around 1750, and that those that came to North Carolina from Pennsylvania were David, Thomas, John and William Black. Thomas, John and William were brothers and, in all likelihood, David was their father. There is a deed that states that a David Black, a resident of Rowan County, NC, purchased land in the region of what is now Rutherford County, NC in 1757.
I am wondering if your William Black (born in 1749) is the brother of our Thomas Black (1741-1779)??

Eva Rosanna Rayfield (Bess Chapel)
Would you please turn Eva Rosanna Rayfield at Bess Chapel Cemetery over to me. This would mean a great deal to me. She was my Great-Great Grandmother and I grew up hearing stories about her. She was Eva Rosanna Kistler and married J.T. Rayfield. She and J. T, Rayfield had no children, but she had one child by Anthony Shitle who she was never married to. She was a midwife in Lincoln County and was known as "Granny Rayfield."
I just left flowers and a message on her page and mistakenly said she was my Great-Grandmother, when she actually was my Great-Great Grandmother. I will delete and correct this on her page.
You have been at this for quite a while and I want to thank you for all the work that you have done and continue to do.

Photo on Memorial for Richard R Cuyler
Mr. Jordan

I just noticed a photo you have posted to the memorial of RichardRan dolph Cuyler is actually the grave of his son, Richard Matthei Cuyler.

Perhaps you could removed it from this memorial and repost it to his son's.

Thank you for all of your contributions!!!!!
