I have been researching my family tree, taking over the work that my dad started many years ago. My dad, the family patriarch, is the keeper of the family genealogy, old family stories/scandals and ancient family pictures. We've had a good time together talking about family history and sharing our discoveries.
Of course, everything is a never ending project. More grave sites of ancestors to find and record. I also try to pay it forward by creating memorials for other people's loved ones along the way, time permitting.
My direct lineal ancestry on my paternal side goes back to my
11th great grandparents, Edward and Mary Bosworth, who sailed from England to Boston, Massachusetts aboard the "Elizabeth Dorcas" in 1634. From there, I descend from their son Jonathan, then from his son Jonathan Bosworth, Jr., who was married to Hannah Howland, daughter of Mayflower passengers John Howland and Elizabeth Tilley. Then from their son Deacon David Bosworth of Halifax, to his son Nehemiah, his son John, his son Benjamin, and so on.
My grandmother immigrated from County Cavan, Ireland in 1907 and came with her sister through Ellis Island, New York. The rest of their family came soon after, with some moving on to Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
My mother's people were all English, Irish, and Scottish immigrants to Chatham, New Brunswick, Canada; the Natick/Wellesley, Mass. area; and Upland, Pennsylvania.
Family surnames of interest: Bosworth, Gifford, Woodworth, Potter, Palmer, Wilbor, Wilcox, Dixon, Chadwick, Merrihew, Spooner, Taber, Sampson, Tomson, and Bryant. Also, Gilston, McCracken, Waters, Jackson, and Mahood.
I invite & encourage anyone to leave notes and flowers on the memorials here, if you so choose. Thank you!
Find-A-Grave is a fantastic place for memorializing the deceased and helping folks with family history research.
I've met many kind, wonderful people through this activity. It is truly a blessing to collaborate with folks who give so generously and unselfishly of their time and energy, while continually striving to make the Find-A-Grave site a better place for all. Thank you for all your amazing work and caring, positive attitude!
Unfortunately, I've also seen the other side of the coin. The memorial manager or two who can be downright nasty and belligerent when asked to do simple edits, or when updated grave photos are added to memorials under their control. Sadly, a few folks seem to have lost sight of the real purpose for which these memorials to the dearly departed were created in the first place. Fortunately, the Curmudgeons are in the minority here.
To these "Negative Nellies" I just have to say ~~
Seriously! Please get over yourself! It is not all about you!
Copies of any rude, nasty, offensive messages left on my profile page will forwarded to the Find-A-Grave admins for handling.
Note: Find-a-Grave Policy ~~
Q.~ Is it acceptable to add a memorial for someone who is still living? (That is a memorial created from "pre-need" information on a grave marker.)
A.~ Please try to avoid it. In general, we do not encourage adding memorials for individuals who are still living. Please do not add pre-need memorials to Find A Grave. Memorials for individuals who are alive will be removed when requested.....
Remember ~~ Memorials here are for the dearly departed,
not the clearly still living!
Major Pet Peeve~~
People who create memorials as "burial unknown" with no cemetery based solely on information gleaned from online obituaries that are marked as "internment private". Then a contributor walks through the cemetery photographing markers and inadvertently creates a duplicate memorial because the departed is not already listed in that cemetery. This has become a big problem on Find-A-Grave and is a huge, huge headache to resolve. If you are unwilling or unable to do the required research necessary to complete a memorial, PLEASE LEAVE IT ALONE! You are not doing the dearly departed or their family members any favors by churning out random "burial unknown" memorials. You are only wasting your time and mine!
Also on the peeve list~~
Contributors who think that pictures of tree stumps, leaves, weeds, shrubs, feet, and crooked, warped, illegible headstone pictures are suitable grave photos for a loved one's Find-A-Grave memorial. Again, you are not doing the dearly departed or their family members any favors by churning out a sub-standard product because you can't be bothered to do the job right.
Please explain your relationship in any transfer request! Any non-direct relatives (aunts, uncles, cousins, etc) are not required to be transferred according to Find A Grave policies. I may do transfers outside of guidelines if I have no family attachment to the memorial. Please keep in mind that the original contributor may also be related to the memorial. Bulk surname requests should not be made.

"Do not stand at my grave and weep, I am not there...I do not sleep. I am the thousand winds that blow... I am the diamond glints on snow... I am the sunlight on ripened grain... I am the gentle Autumn rain. When you waken in the morning's hush, I am the swift uplifting rush Of gentle birds in circling flight... I am the soft star that shines at night. Do not stand at my grave and cry - I am not there... I did not die."

"Your tombstone stands among the rest;
neglected and alone
The name and date are chiseled out
on polished, marbled stone
It reaches out to all who care
It is too late to mourn
You did not know that I'd exist
You died and I was born.
Yet each of us are cells of you
in flesh, in blood, in bone.
Our blood contracts and beats a pulse
entirely not our own.
Dear Ancestor, the place you filled
one hundred years ago
Spreads out among the ones you left
who would have loved you so.
I wonder if you lived and loved,
I wonder if you knew
That someday I would find this spot,
and come to visit you."

No, thank you for catching those errors! I really do try hard and sometimes I'm stunned at what gets through. I love the photo that you have for him too! -Margo-
PS That back section of flat stones at the Baptist Burial Ground doesn't get much attention but there are some unique and interesting people back there!
