|Bill Gunn||Last name vs Maiden Name|
Find A Grave says maiden names only apply to married women, as you eluded.
My Problem with that:
So I'm looking at a memorial for Jane Smith, with no other information. The Smith is listed as her last name, now I have to guess if she was married to a Smith. Do I now go looking for Mr. Smith?
Looking at the same memorial, with Smith in the Maiden Name field, and no name in the Last Name field, I know immediately that she wasn't married.
It appears that Find A Grave or Ancestry is changing them anyway, as I found several unmarried women whose maiden name has been moved to the last name field.
Confusion abounds, common sense is lost.
Fill out almost any government form and it asks for both;
Men have last names.
Women have maiden names and married names.
If maiden name is the last name, and the last name is the last name, why is there even a place for the maiden name?
Just trying to figure it all out.
|Vickie Smejkal||Lavina Kline - Find A Grave|
Trying to delete the dupe, but Find A Grave will not let it go through, as the site(s) were transferred to me. :-(
I may have to get with the originator to see if she can get one of the sites deleted.

Thank you for letting me know of the error. Are you related to this young girl? I'd be glad to transfer her memorial to your care.

Would you happen to have more information on Lavina?
I've been researching the folks in this area of Riverside Cemetery for 6 years now. I would love it if you have something I can add to my data base and post on my website as well - www.block12riverside.com
Are you related to Lavina?
Would you like for me to transfer her memorial site to you?
|janicet||Italian women and married names|
You sent an edit adding (incorrectly) a husband's surname to one of my cousins. In Italy, women do not take their husband's surname upon marriage. However, they are married. These are my cousins and they have confirmed this information. However, since they are married, I put their surname in the maiden name. Then they will be found with their father's family. There will be links to their husband so that they can be found with their husband and children. Until findagrave finds a better way to adapt to other cultures, this is the way that my Italian cousins have suggested.

Thanks for the information on James. It does seem to fit and I have added it to his memorial. If this is a person of interest to you I would be happy to transfer.
