We Are The Chosen |
We are the chosen. In each family there is one who seems called to find
the ancestors. To put flesh on their bones and make them live again, to
tell the family story and to feel that somehow they know and approve.
Doing genealogy is not a cold gathering of facts but, instead, breathing
life into all who have gone before. We are the storytellers of the tribe.
All tribes have one. We have been called, as it were, by our genes. Those
who have gone before cry out to us, "Tell our story!" So, we do. In
finding them, we somehow find ourselves. How many graves have I stood before
now and cried? I have lost count. How many times have I told the
ancestors, "You have a wonderful family; you would be proud of us." How many times
have I walked up to a grave and felt somehow there was love there for me?
I cannot say. It goes beyond just documenting facts. It goes to who am I
and why do I do the things I do. It goes to seeing a cemetery about to be
lost forever to weeds and indifference and saying, "I can't let this
happen." The bones here are bones of my bone and flesh of my flesh. It goes to
doing something about it. It goes to pride in what our ancestors were able
to accomplish, how they contributed to what we are today. It goes to
respecting their hardships and losses, their never giving in or giving up,
their resoluteness to go on and build a life for their family. It goes to deep
pride that the fathers fought and some died to make and keep us a Nation.
It goes to a deep and immense understanding that they were doing it for us.
It is of equal pride and love that our mothers struggled to give us at

|Bob Ferda||RE: Pauline Barnhart|
Pauline Perdue Barnhart is buried on the same lot as her husband, in the same spot. I contacted the cemetery and the confirmed that she is there. No separate stone to take a picture of. Her husband is Blane (Rather than Blaine), memorial 153201793. She may have been cremated.

I am sorry to tell this, I found grave number 370 of William Billson that is buried beside Florence (grave number 371) but, she has no headstone.

Your patience with adding my additions and changes to the my cousin's ( MCCoy family) memorials is greatly appreciated. I hope you will excuse my transgression of lifting a photo from Press Kerr's memorial for his wife, Olive Mazie McCoy Kerr's memorial.
Thank You, Bob Todd

|LSJRJT||29300585 - Pauline Elsie Wolfe Hickman|
I see that you have (at least) two names that I am researching. Pauline Elsie Wolfe Hickman and her son, Roger Shenton.
I'm thinking that Pauline is a daughter of Martin Elias Wolfe, Jr., and Viola Laura Downard. I am researching the Wolfe family, which is my son-in-law's family.
I looked at James Glenn Shenton, Jr's site (33557795) and he lists 3 sisters and 2 brothers (also a daughter and son).
Do you know how the siblings "fit" together? I believe Pauline was married to James Glenn Shenton, Sr., but not quite sure how Dewayne Wolfe and the rest of the siblings are connected.
Any direction or help in this situation would be appreciated!! Thank you!!!

What wonderful paragraphs you have about why we all do this thing called "genealogy". No one could have expressed it better.

|NWilliams||Caroline Kelley Carpenter|
Deborah, I have found that there are two memorials set up for Caroline Kelley Carpenter on Kelleys Island. The first was set up in 2007; #23191230, and yours in 2009. Unfortunately, the 1st memorial has the incorrect date of death, of which I have informed the memorial creator. I see that you also added the headstone photo when you created your memorial. Perhaps you can add the photo to the original memorial and its creator will correct the date of death as I asked her to do.
Thank you for all the work you have done for Find A Grave. I have a strong vested interest in Kelleys Island as I am a descendant of Datus Kelley's brother, Irad, & my family has been summer residents of the island for over 100+ years.
