About Us
Kent and I are taphophiles. We usually visit 1 or 2 cemeteries a month documenting graves and searching for ancestors. Kent enjoys tagging with me and I appreciate his company and input.
My passions include photography, genealogy, bringing people and their stories back to life. I enjoy photographing tombstones and entering the information on Findagrave. In addition, I work from burial indexes, old newspapers and other sources when entering memorials.
My two history passions revolve around Moran Place - The Blog and Dead Memphis Talking. Moran Place is dedicated to family history while Dead Memphis Talking uses period newspaper articles to bring the fascinating, sometimes bawdy and always politically incorrect history of Memphis to life. It also expands on many of the memorials you'll find on Findagrave.
A lot of the memorials we maintain are family. A lot are not. Each memorial is special. We try to do additional research to find out about the people behind the memorials we create.

Archaic Dating Methods
You often see in obituaries and correspondence the abbreviation "inst." and "ult".
Inst is an abbreviation for instant meaning current. Ult. is an abbreviation for ultimo/ultimate and indicates an event took place the previous month.
example: "The funeral was on the 18th ult." simply means the funeral was on the 18th of the previous month whereas "The funeral was on the 18th inst." means it took place in the current month.
Archaic Terminology
Relict is used as we use the word widow today. It denotes the female surviving spouse who did not remarry after the death of her husband.
Consort is seen on headstones and denotes the deceased wife. "Mary, consort of John."
née is sometimes seen on headstones and is used to indicate a woman's maiden name. example: Mary Timberlake nee Jones. Jones was her maiden name.
