I started doing genealogy in 1996, when my husband's family passed around old photos and other information at a family reunion. I have been hooked every since!|
I am not sure how I stumbled onto the Findagrave site, but when I saw what they were doing, I decided to start putting on-line the information that I have. Then I realized the potential of this site, by housing grave stones before cemeteries could be destroyed by moving or vandals, I started driving to area cemeteries and copying headstone information.
Instead of creating memorial pages, I am concentrating on getting the "85 Million" memorials linked together. Don't get me wrong, I still make memorial pages as well as photograph cemeteries, however, my main interest right now is getting families linked together.
Please do not duplicate memorials! It makes it difficult to link families together and/or complete cemeteries when there are duplications. First do a search of the whole website AND then if you know the cemetery, search the cemetery as well...Thank you for your consideration.
Please make note: It is NOT a "numbers" game to me, I do this to honor the deceased! I spend upwards of 10+ hours a day on the computer working on findagrave.com. It does not matter who has the memorial page, if I can add information, I send it to the creator, if it is a relative and I have a photo, I add it to the memorial page...what is important here is NOT that I have maintenance of a relative's memorial page, it is that someone cared enough to go out and photograph that memorial so that I and future generations can see the headstone!
Not to upset or belittle anyone, but I WILL ONLY MAKE PERMANENT TRANSFERS WITHIN THE GUIDELINES OF FINDAGRAVE.COM that being 4 GENERATIONS: Spouses, Parents, Brothers and Sisters, Children, Grand-children, Grandparents, and Great-grandparents. Please use the "EDIT" tab to ask for EACH transfer. PLEASE STATE YOUR RELATIONSHIP TO THE DECEASED and your member id#, without these, your request will be deleted.
For EXTENDED FAMILY MEMBERS or all other requests, I will gladly make additions, corrections or links. PLEASE USE the "EDIT" TAB on the upper right-hand corner of the memorial to send the information. This sends me a direct link to the memorial page required to make the changes. I delete all requests left on my "bio" page or sent to me in a e-mail. Don't forget to send the memorial numbers for links.
If you are seeking transfer to "have all my family together" ~ use the virtual cemetery button. Then all of the memorials will be in the same "cemetery", and you can look at them daily.
Because others feel the same as I do about their hard work, I have also been working with others on "Teamwork Temporary Transfers" - see information below.
Please DO NOT leave biographical information and obituaries in a virtual flower. This is against findagrave.com policy...and the flower will be reported as "abused". As stated, I do make corrections when asked, as well as as try to give credit where credit is due.
Thanks to all of you who have sent additional information for the memorials.
"Teamwork Temporary Transfers" - I have started working with a few people on a project we are calling "Teamwork Temporary Transfers"...If we have a great deal of changes to be made to a memorial page or quite a bit of information to add to a bio section. I will request a transfer of the memorial page, make the updates and return the memorial page to the original creator. This involves TRUST. I will only request one or two memorials at a time. If you doesn't get transferred back...do not issue anymore memorial pages to anyone…its that simple. "Fool me once, shame on you... fool me twice, shame on me!" Please, give it a try.
When you click on "Transfer Management" the instructions state: "This action is PERMANENT and can not be undone." This is misleading. The PERMANENT implies that it will be lost to you FOREVER. That is true only if it NEVER gets transferred back to your control. The other aspect of TEAMWORK TRANSFER is that the person who contributes the research can add their name in the bio or notes with an embedded link. Contributors who say they will add information that you send to them don't always credit their source. They don't want others taking credit for the photos they post, but they don't think twice about taking credit for other people's research and just pass it off as their own.
I have also joined Find a Grave Volunteers of Southern Indiana.
I am also the County Keeper for Hancock County, Indiana.

Hi - I stopped by Monroe again today, glad I did. I was wrong about the death year - it is indeed 1858. I ran my finger over the number a few times and the sun was bright, so I am confident it is correct. If the family had this info as well, that just helps. I sent you an edit but wanted to leave you a note letting you know I definitely double-checked it. Pat

Hi - I went to Monroe today and took a couple of photos of his stone. Honestly, I had read your note and was concentrating on the last # of the death year(my error). It is very worn on that edge so I felt it to make sure it was an 8, and it is.
Looking at the photos, I can see the other # could be seen as a 3 or 5, but I believe it's a 3. I will be going back there soon and will definitely take another look to be 100% sure. Sorry I can't say that today, if I had read the note more carefully I would have been looking for the right #. Will let you know after my next visit. Pat(ohlw)

Thank you for the obituary and death date correction for my great-great-aunt, Rhoda Butcher. I've noted it in the bio.
I am positive they have the wrong birth date on the stone for her husband, Perry, as well, even though I don't have an obituary for him. Makes me wonder who gave the information to the headstone maker.
I appreciate your help!
G - Thanks for updating Aunt Allie's memorial. We appreciate it. Patrivia

Mary E. Mitchell #37434657 is buried at the Riverside Cemetery in Spencer, Owen Co., IN. There is a stone there pictured. Same dates, if you go by the Greene Co. cemetery book, it has way too many errors in it. Thanks.

I just received a photo request fulfilled message for my great aunt and found your memorial page. This is my mother's aunt and I wonder if you would allow me to take over the memorial? She was a Salvation Army minister. I have this old photo of her and always wondered about her life story. I just found that she wound up in Indiana (from Norwalk, CT). It's so amazing to find these little links.
Thanks so much for considering!
