Bio and Links
Bio Photo My Uncle, Virgil Lee Phillips, got me started researching my family tree. I never met him and I was actually born 10 years after he died. He was declared MIA in the Korean War on November 2, 1950. I started looking for anything at all I could find out about him. I discovered the Korean War Project site and they had a page for Virgil and they needed DNA from family. I wasn't eligible (had to be Virgil's mom, or his mom's sister or her sister's children). I eventually found an eligible DNA donor in 2005 and his DNA was put in the database. Long story short, his remains were found in North Korea in 2005 (some records have the year as 2003 - but I believe 2005 is the accurate year). He was brought to the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command in Hawaii which is where he stayed unidentified until late 2007. My uncle arrived on April 16th back to his home State of Indiana and was buried in Loogootee, Indiana (Goodwill Cemetery) on April 18, 2008 - almost 58 years after his death.
