We Are The Chosen |
We are the chosen. In each family there is one who seems called to find
the ancestors. To put flesh on their bones and make them live again, to
tell the family story and to feel that somehow they know and approve.
Doing genealogy is not a cold gathering of facts but, instead, breathing
life into all who have gone before. We are the storytellers of the tribe.
All tribes have one. We have been called, as it were, by our genes. Those
who have gone before cry out to us, "Tell our story!" So, we do. In
finding them, we somehow find ourselves. How many graves have I stood before
now and cried? I have lost count. How many times have I told the
ancestors, "You have a wonderful family; you would be proud of us." How many times
have I walked up to a grave and felt somehow there was love there for me?
I cannot say. It goes beyond just documenting facts. It goes to who am I
and why do I do the things I do. It goes to seeing a cemetery about to be
lost forever to weeds and indifference and saying, "I can't let this
happen." The bones here are bones of my bone and flesh of my flesh. It goes to
doing something about it. It goes to pride in what our ancestors were able
to accomplish, how they contributed to what we are today. It goes to
respecting their hardships and losses, their never giving in or giving up,
their resoluteness to go on and build a life for their family. It goes to deep
pride that the fathers fought and some died to make and keep us a Nation.
It goes to a deep and immense understanding that they were doing it for us.
It is of equal pride and love that our mothers struggled to give us at

Deborah, I am a little confused about all the different Alexander Edies in Hancock County. I believe Alexander Edie (1823-1855), spouse of Elizabeth Devore, is the memorial you created in the New Cumberland Cemetery. I can't find his death records, but I know their last child was born 1854 and he doesn't appear in any census after 1850. Please correct me if I am in error and disregard my edit in ref. to Alexander Edie in Flats Cemetery. Thank you!

The phone number is 614-236-0024, but I'm afraid that I don't have any further information about the cemetery.

Thank you so much for the transfer.
About my lost gg-grandmother I sort of have a time line on location and I know she died when her oldest was nine yrs old. The biggest problem is her last name was Brown, may as well be Smith!:)

LOL....thanks Deborah. Maybe one of these days someone who is actually related to these Masons will step up and claim them :)

OK sorry. Taking care of a bunch of duplications. Really appreciate you doing this and all your volunteer work on FindAGrave.

It's me again....lol.
Alrighty, I added the pic of Esther's stone to your memorial page and have deleted my page for her. I also went ahead and transferred my memorial pages for her parents and brother to you. I see that I also added several other Masons to this cemetery as well. If any of those are part of your line, just let me know and I will transfer those as well :)

Hi again Deborah :)
I'm a bit out of it this evening...lol. I didn't realize exactly what was transpiring with this memorial. Obviously, this memorial is of interest to you as you had a memorial page for her already, just listed in the wrong cemetery. I will go in and add the photo of her stone to your memorial, and then will delete my page so there is not a duplicate listing.

I received the email notification of your edit request, but it is not yet appearing on my edit list.
I was in the Highland Cemetery in Midland recently and just took the pic of this tombstone as I have Masons in my family line. However, after a bit of research, I find that Esther is not part of my Mason line. If she is part of your family, I will gladly transfer her memorial to you :) Just let me know.
