Thank you for noting Daniel's Civil War service. He was an artificer( I had to look it up). He served all four years, although he was AWOL for 30 days once as I suppose thousands were. He was my paternal grandmother's grandfather. Joe Rebholz, Stamford, CT

Do you know what the smaller engraving says at the bottom of this headstone? This is my second great grandfather and his wife Lucretia is buried in Dallas, Oregon. Carla

RE: Squire Mazeppa mn
Hi Tom --

Thank you so much! Yes, their son George Henry married Rachel Phillips. If you get over to Mazeppa again some time, would love to have photos of their graves as well.

Interesting story about George and Rachel -- their only son Yale Henry Squire (named after my Great-Great Grandfather, Yale Henry, was a reporter for the Minneapolis Tribune. In April, 1917, he applied for a passport and went to France to join the American Volunteer Ambulance Corps.

Instead, he ended up as a 1st Lieutenant in the Army and was an instructor at the 2nd Aviation Training Center. He died in an airplane accident at Fere-en-Tardenois on June 27, 1918 and is buried in the American Cemetery at Oise-Aisne. He was 24 years old.

Again -- I appreciate your efforts on my family's behalf.

William Henry Squire's Grave
Hi Tom,
William Henry Squire was married to Mary Jane Ingamells, who came to this country in 1851 with her family. Her sister Darcey went to work as a domestic housekeeper for my 2nd Great Grandfather and married him after his first wife died in 1873.
Darcey pretty much raised my Great Grandfather and his brothers and sister and was much loved in Jefferson, WI.

Two of the Ingamells brothers, Charles and George, both enlisted in the Union army on Sept. 7, 1861 at Waterloo in Jefferson County, WI. Charles was killed at Memphis, TN and George died in one of the final battles at Fort Blakeley, near Spanish Fort, AL.

I have tried to find the other members of the family with no success. If you don't live too far from Mazeppa Cemetery, could you see if Mary Jane is buried with William H. Squire and take a photo of her grave?

It might also be possible that there are some members of her family there, including her mother, Mary Marfleet Ingamells, although I doubt that.

Thank you for your time and effort on behalf of our Civil War soldiers.

Herman and Wilhelmine Rackow
Hello Tom,
Thank-you for bringing the duplicate of these names to my attention. I have removed my entries. Herman and Wilhelmine were my great grandparents. They arrived in Baltimore in June of 1883, from Germany. Thank-you for the photos of their graves-- and thank-you for your dedication in preserving important historical information!
