Please change bio to read:
George was studying medicine in New Hampshire when he got the gold fever and became a reasonably successful '49er. He did well, quit mining and wound up in San Diego where he spent his time drinking with his buddies. His future father-in-law, Juan Rodriquez, lived in the building that is now the Racine & Laramie Tobacco Shop that faces the square in Old Town. The wedding of Tebbetts and Maria was celebrated in the home of Juan Bandini. At the time, it was a single story house but received a second story when it was converted to a hotel. Tebbetts was the first white mayor of San Diego and later moved to Santa Barbara where he became a newspaper publisher. about TebbettsThe Tebbetts were newspaper people, with close links to Thomas A. Storke (Santa Barbara News-Press). Despite the title of the collection, much of the material relates to Nathan Tebbetts' life. Nat grew up in Santa Barbara, but worked with the San Franciso Examiner for many years, mostly resort advertising. His father, George P. Tebbetts, founded the SB Daily and Weekly Independent, and the collection includes financial records of the paper in the 1880s and 1890s. See San Diego Historical Society site https://www.sandiegohistory.org/bio/tebbets/tebbets.htm for more . Editorial (2010) also Tebbetts acquired the San Luis Rey Ranch in the 1850s, then in the 1860s, he moved to Santa Barbara where he started the Santa Barbara Press. In 1868, President Ulysses S. Grant appointed him Postmaster General. He later published two other newspapers, the Daily Independent and the Daily News. In 1907, he moved to San Francisco where he remained until his death on January 9, 1909. Source: http://en.wikipedia.org
