 | Pleggie Leger I've seen that article about Mrs. Leger. It's on the Acadia Parish GenWeb site. Maybe we could post a link to the article rather than trying to post the entire thing. I'll see what I can do. | | | Cory
 | Paul Adams - Eunice Strickland Yes, Eunice is the mother of Paul. However, I doubt her husband Woodrow is his father. I will find out for certain when I speak to his older brother by phone this evening. I can tell you that Eunice is originally from West Virginia.
Thanks for the info! I did link him to his mother.

 | RE: Murder of Amos Ashworth Thank you so much for the information on where to find the article and the book. The article popped right up. I had never seen the article before and didn't know about the website. I'll try to find the book, too.
I think the murder of Amos Moses Ashworth WAS the reason they were being captured in Louisiana. They killed him in October of 1880, then escaped for a time, then were captured as shown by this article. Valentine is reported to have dressed in women's clothing and worked in the fields to escape detection...don't know if that was in Texas or Louisiana.
Bill (William) must have survived the shooting because in 1885 he is given an appeal in which he won the opportunity for a new trial (he was serving a 20 year sentence for killing his cousin, Amos). The defense was that he was not given the opportunity to plead "self-defense" as he was defending Valentine. Apparently, he thought Amos was firing on Valentine when it was really just a warning shot.
I've never seen the original trial which took place in Trinity County, but the appeal has a lot of good family information in it. Of course, since the victim and defendants were related, all the family information is useful for those of us who are related. Amos Moses was my great grandfather's brother. Valentine and William were sons of Amos' father's twin brother.
Valentine has a couple of prison conduct records on ancestry that show him serving 20 and 2 year sentences concurrently. The earliest date on the records is 1888, but perhaps that is the first time he received a blot on his conduct record. He was released in 1902 which would be about 20 years after the arrest and subsequent trial.
He seemed to settle down after that; remarrying and having 2 daughters. I can find no record for William after the appeal, but there must have been a new trial.
Thank you for all the work you are doing in getting this information available to us. I love learning the stories of this family...the good, the bad, and the ugly. Never a dull moment!

 | Valentine Ashworth Article I would love to read the article about Valentine and his brother, Bill, but it doesn't pop up largen enough to read. Where can I find a copy of this or can it be submitted as a larger photo?
Thanks, Verna | | | Sheron Smith-Savage
 | Name While some people want to make contributions anonymously, a zombie is defined as "a soulless corpse said to be revived by witchcraft"—perhaps you will reconsider using your own name, or a name more appropriate to this website, which honors our ancestors. | | | | [View all messages...] |
