WE ARE THE CHOSEN
[Author: Della M. Cumming ca 1943.]
My feelings are in each family we are called to find the ancestors.
To put flesh on their bones and make them live again,
To tell the family story and to feel that somehow they know and approve.
To me, doing genealogy is not a cold gathering of facts but, instead,
Breathing life into all who have gone before.
We are the story tellers of the tribe.
We have been called as it were by our genes.
Those who have gone before cry out to us:
Tell our story.
So, we do.
In finding them, we somehow find ourselves.
How many graves have I stood before now and cried?
I have lost count.
How many times have I told the ancestors
you have a wonderful family, you would be proud of us?
How many times have I walked up to a grave
and felt somehow there was love there for me?
I cannot say.
It goes beyond just documenting facts.
It goes to who I am and why I do the things I do?
It goes to seeing a cemetery about to be lost forever
to weeds and indifference and saying I can't let this happen.
The bones here are bones of my bone and flesh of my flesh.
It goes to doing something about it.
It goes to pride in what our ancestors were able to accomplish.
How they contributed to what we are today.
It goes to respecting their hardships and losses,
their never giving in or giving up.
Their resoluteness to go on and build a life for their family.
It goes to deep pride that they fought to make and keep us a Nation.
It goes to a deep and immense understanding that they were doing it for us
That we might be born who we are.
That we might remember them.
So we do.
With love and caring and scribing each fact of their existence,
Because we are them and they are us.
So, as a scribe called, I tell the story of my family.
It is up to that one called in the next generation,
To answer the call and take their place in the long line of family storytellers.
That is why I do my family genealogy,
And that is what calls those young and old to step up and put flesh on the bones.

Hello Donna, I see I made a typo in the edit for his date of death, it is Sept 14, NOT the 24th. Paul

Hello Donna, I submitted three edit requests. One to add his place of birth and his full date and place of death. The second is to add his Civil War Regiment to the Bio section of his memorial. The third his middle name. The sources were his obit from the Richfield Springs Mercury and his military pension record which contained his date of death and location. Thanks for having created his memorial. Paul Turner

I have deleted the pictures. I am not sure about linking, etc. Please be patient, I've been a member about 19 days. I really thought this was super interesting and didn't intend on walking on your toes.
Please let me know if there is anything else I need to do on my end.
|keith carpenter||Alice Eudora Smith|
This is a VERY strange one here. I was looking for Alice's brother Allen in Oswego, IL. There I found a four sided stone. 1 side had parents (5905708 / 5905711)), 1 side her brother "Charley" (5905720), 1 side was blank, and the other side had Alice E Smith. So no idea if she passed in NY or IL.

Hi. I am so sorry. I really need to check my messages more than every 6 months.

|Irma||Samuel Stevens #112236706|
Hi Donna-can you tell me your source for Samuel's birth date? Because there is just not enough info on his erroded headstone to determine when he was born, as there were six Samuel Stevens born in Killingworth CT. I already have the Barbour vital records for Killingworth, so please tell me something different then that. Thanks! Irma

Find A Grave #87820046
You show her date of death to be October 10, 1718, when the tombstone clearly states "desesed October 30, 1718."
Can you please adjust?
Her 1st Cousin, 7 times removed!

Thank you so much for letting me know where my 5th Great Grandfather & Grandmother are buried. I have been looking for him and was never able to find a record of where he was buried. I saw you memorial for her. Anyway they are now in their final resting place.
We need to talk soon as we share some relatives. I have been so busy the last few months I haven't been able to work on my family much.
