My brother "Skip" and I enjoy genealogy. He's my expert regarding Belmont county, OH. We both take photos of tombstones, especially of family members. Some of the surnames are Bain, Bane, Blaine, Budd, Curtis, Giffen, Giffin, Griffith, Haines, Hepburn, Hinkle, Keyser, Long, Milligan, Pond, Spears, Shahan, and Terrill.|
UPDATE: Skip started a GIFFEN DNA Group.
In addition to Belmont county, OH, we explore Ohio and Brooke counties in WV. I travel between Belmont Co and Columbus, OH. So, I make a few stops along the way, such as Cambridge or Zanesville.
I look for family tombstones across the country and try to link them back to Belmont Co., OH or Ohio Co., WV.
I have several GIFFEN / GIFFIN family trees at ancestry.com. There's my Giffen family which started with Robert and Mary (Bane) Giffen. Plus a family tree for the Andrew Giffin family. I recently started a Simon Giffin tree.
My ancestry.com tree name is "Terry Magyar"
More recently, I've added family trees for Giffens/Giffins in the following Ohio counties; Athens, Butler, Coshocton, Licking, Miami & Hamilton, and Ross County. Many of these Scotch-Irish lines can be followed back to the late 1700s, in Penn.
I presently live in Franklin Co., OH, but grew up in Belmont Co., OH.
Please contact me (use the EDIT function) if need an item corrected of if you have additional information regarding any of the these families.
I highly recommend the Cumberland Trail Genealogical Society's book "Your Guide to Belmont Co. Cemeteries". ($20 + shipping)

|Cynthia||RE: Old Tent Cemetery|
This is curious Terry, my great great uncle Jacob Barney married Amanda Giffin 1839-1909. I know nothing about her Giffin family. Jacob and Amanda were from Fulton County, PA and died in Greensburg, KS. Are you related to any Giffin from Fulton, Co.?

|Cynthia||RE: Mary Buchanan Stewart|
Hi Terry, I am related to Mary Buchanan. I have Mary's dates from family records via Lillian Gladys Buchanan White (my great aunt - she was my grandmother Nellie Florence Buchanan Archer's sister) quote: "Thomas Buchanan born 1722 married Rachel Williamson. They had a daughter named Mary E. Buchanan born 1758 died 1845 who married Robert S. Stewart born 1752 died 1838. My Aunt Eleanor Archer Clovis who is 92 thinks Mary's middle name might have been Ellen. "I don't remember what their initials stand for now but I think Mary's middle might have been Ellen." Aunt Gladys also said, "They lived at Turkey Run waters of Big Wheeling Creek." Looks like when Mary and Robert were buried Old Tent Cemetery was called Peters Run Cemetery. At least that's what Great Aunt Gladys called it. There is no reference for a stone. I have never been there.
Which side is your family? We must be cousins. Hope this helps.

He would have been my 4th cousin.
|Mike Givens||Belle Allen|
Thank you for the great info on Isabella "Belle" Allen. She was my gr-gr-grandmother. She and Charlie Crymble had one son, Harry Crymble, my gr-grandfather. I have a picture of Belle, which my gr-grandfather kept in memory of her, on my Ancestry tree. I'd share the picture here, but I don't see a way to attach a photo.

|Diane & John||RE: Minne Allen|
Thank you! You've helped fill in some blanks for me! Didn't have anything on Minnie Allen.
Do you have any more info on Dorothy Griffin?
|Diane & John||RE: Louis P Loy|
Louis' granddaughter is looking into this. The name she had for his 2nd wife is Minnie Allen! So this Dorothy seems to be a mystery.
|Diane & John||Re: Louis P. Loy|
I answered too quickly! Louis Portwood Loy (1893-1976), buried in Oak Grove Cemetery is my husband's uncle.
The stone you took in Shipman cemetery is for Dorothy Griffin, not for Louis P. Loy. You should not have made an entry for Louis P. Loy in that cemetery, only Dorothy.
Louis Portwood Loy was married twice. His 2nd wife according to our records was Dorothy Gray.
I am forwarding your question to a granddaughter of Louis Portwood Loy.
