RE: John Irvin
Hi Benny,
I heard a similar story, that he would hide out in the woods/caves when troops and gangs from either side came around looking for military aged men.

Ora Mae Irvin Cooper
Hi Benny,
I don't know a whole lot about the Irvins, especially Alfred's branch (Ora's father). Bill, Alfred's brother, was my g-g-grandfather (my father's father's mother's father). John Irvin, father to Bill and Alfred, came to Hardin County from Alabama according to the census I believe. My grandfather had told stories that he'd come from Ireland to New Orleans, then up the Mississippi, another story I heard was that John as a teenager was moving west with his family, then for whatever reason (disagreement?) struck out on his own and settled in Hardin County. Several of the older Irvins were buried at Plummer's Chapel. Ora Cooper didn't ring a bell for my dad (did she have a nickname?). He was born 1936 and grew up in Hardin County, left after high school and then went back to retire. Very poor health now. Do you have any questions in particular?

Thanks Benny for taking the time out of your day to seek our shipmate's marker and photograph it. I've added his name to our growing list of fallen Seabees, which I read at our annual reunions. Thanks again. CAN DO! Dave Schill, President, CBMU-302 Assn.
