I have been doing geneology for over 30 years and have recently discovered Find A Grave. It is a great way to link my families and share the discoveries. Any corrections or additions are welcome. | |

 | RE: Oris Wynne headstone I'd go with what was listed on the death certificate. Old City and Woodland were still active then. Other then those two, there were two other cemeteries open in Jeff City at the time: St. Peter's II and Riverview. Only Catholics are buried at St. Peter's and Riverview was the "toney" cemetery. People who were moved from Old City/Woodland to Riverview are listed as being moved, so Oris probably wasn't. | | | Kelly Keefe
 | RE: Oris Wynne headstone I'm sorry we won't be able to find him for you. Let me give you a little background about that particular cemetery.
Despite it's name, Old City Cemetery was never owned by the city until recent times. It was actually privately owned and the city didn't take over "ownership" and management until the late 60's. The city only took it over because it had become an eyesore due to abandonment. But even before that, the place was horribly maintained. I have a newspaper article written just after the Civil War talking about what a disgrace it was. You can imagine what sort of state it as in 100 years later. By the time the city took it over whatever records of burials or maps were long gone.
In 1976 the local DAR chapter published a listing of all graves which still hard markers. They did a complete survey of both Old City and Woodland, which abuts it, and that is the ONLY record the city has of who is buried there and where. Even today the cemetery is in pretty sad shape. The city mows it,but that's about it. When markers topple they are removed and thrown into a pile.
So if Oris wasn't listed in the 1976 survey there is absolutely now way of knowing where he is buried although the death certificate clearly indicates he IS there. Using the survey I can at least find the where if the person is listed, even if a marker is no longer there. But without a listing in the survey it's simply impossible. It's sad, but I see the same thing time and again.
Sorry I couldn't find him, but it's simply not possible without some references.
