Are you a genealogy addict ? Ask me about joining GoClub-Belmont County, a private social networking site where members share info. and photos regarding Belmont Co. genealogy.|
I'm also looking for volunteers to help add names to Belmont County cemeteries.
My brother "Skip" and I enjoy genealogy. He's my expert regarding Belmont county, OH. We both take photos of tombstones, especially of family members. Some of the surnames are Bain, Bane, Blaine, Budd, Curtis, Giffen, Giffin, Griffith, Haines, Hepburn, Hinkle, Keyser, Long, Milligan, Pond, Spears, Shahan, and Terrill.
I started using the FAG app on my iPhone to photograph tombstones and simultaneously record their gps location. It's so easy. I enjoy using it.
UPDATE: Skip started a GIFFEN DNA Group.
In addition to Belmont county, OH, we explore Ohio and Brooke counties in WV. I travel between Belmont Co and Columbus, OH. So, I make a few stops along the way, such as Cambridge or Zanesville.
I look for family tombstones across the country and try to link them back to Belmont Co., OH, Ohio Co., WV, and PA.
I have several GIFFEN / GIFFIN family trees at ancestry.com. There's my Giffen family which started with Robert and Mary (Bane) Giffen. Plus a family tree for the Andrew Giffin family. I recently started a Simon Giffin tree.
My ancestry.com tree name is "Terry Magyar"
More recently, I've added family trees for Giffens/Giffins in the following Ohio counties; Athens, Butler, Coshocton, Licking, Miami & Hamilton, and Ross County. Many of these Scotch-Irish lines can be followed back to the late 1700s, in Penn.
I presently live in Franklin Co., OH, but grew up in Belmont Co., OH.
Please contact me (use the EDIT function) if need an item corrected of if you have additional information regarding any of the these families.
I highly recommend the Cumberland Trail Genealogical Society's book "Your Guide to Belmont Co. Cemeteries". ($20 + shipping)

You may use my photos, however I ask you credit your source, not just for me but for all the findagrave volunteers.

Hi Terry. Yes, Dominick Morack was my Great Uncle on my maternal side. His sister Virginia was my maternal Grandmother.

Yes, I've helped a woman post some of her research.
So you figure a local chapter had it placed? If the plaque was older I would guess it was my Bro-in-law's doing (he was a SAR), but he passed away 6 years ago and that plaque looks way, way too recent.... besides, I'm sure he would have told me about it, and he also would have had one placed for Bailey Jones (another ancestor, buried right next to V Glass). If you know of a local SAR group let me know so I can thank them!
You think I should change the name on the memorial back to Vincent, since that's the name on the gravestone, and use "Henry Vincent" as a nickname? Problem is, in the early mentions of him [such as in the listing of his children], he's always "Henry" or "Henry Vincent."

Terry here's an updated reply to a months-old message from you. I took some photos at Rock Hill on July 5. HOT!!! SAUNA!!! But I survived thanks to a thin cloud cover that took the edge off the sun. Anyway there has been a new development re: Henry Vincent Glass (Find A Grave #125681929, which I think was yours before you transferred it to me.) As you probably recall, his gravestone says "Vincent," as he dropped the "Henry" as he grew older.... big news is that someone has added a very nice metal (bronze?) plaque to the foot of the gravestone. I photographed it, along with a (way too small) American flag I brought with me. (Next time I'll buy bigger ones!) Check it out, if you haven't already seen it. It seems to be a very recent addition. Cheers! Pete
|Brenda Sunday||RE: Odessa Giffin|
You are very welcome! That is one of the hardest cemeteries to walk because it is about 75% steep hills. The road going in is so steep, I have to put my car in first gear (I have a five speed)just to get up the hill! I get very tired walking it and usually never make it through the whole thing.
|Joe Aman||RE: Jennie (Giffin) Wilson|
My pleasure, Terry. Next to Jennie Wilson's grave is the grave of her husband, Matthew Wilson. In addition,the graves of Matthew's parents and some siblings and I think the daughter of Matthew and Jennie were there also. I took photo's of all the graves and posted them on the memorials that existed and created new memorials for those that did not exist.
