Bio and Links
Bio Photo Long-time instructor of writing and women's studies at Bowling Green State University, Bowling Green, OH. I am an addictive reader, am interested in geneaology, folk music and sacred harp, and am an Anglican, guitar player, singer, guardian of two rescue dogs and mother of a beautiful adult son.

I enjoy walking in cemeteries and have made it a personal project to photograph and record the headstones of military personnel in addition to requests in local cemeteries, in honor of their service and the service of my father, stepfather, and uncles in World War II and Korea, friends from Viet Nam, and students from the Gulf Wars and the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. If any of these service persons or others I have added are family members and/or you wish to manage their memorials, just let me know. I am happy to transfer.

Anyone who wants to use my photos in their family tree, on Findagrave, or any other site may do so without my permission.

I am primarily a volunteer photographer and often am unrelated to the people whose memorials I make, so I am happy to transfer. I am doing this work to honor what would otherwise be lost lives, to make visible what has been forgotten.

I would very much appreciate tributes of love to the memorial of a baby whose heartbreaking obituary I found in a newspaper from 1923:

Baby John Doe: 136921616 and to a young girl who had a hard life and a brief stay in this world: Rene Holley 145768090

Heartfelt thanks to all those who have already added notes--you mean more than I can say

T, Scott Atkinson
Birth Place: John Z. Smith
He is my 2nd Great Grandfather and my mother and I have been researching the Smith Family line for many years. Here is some text that she provided to me:

According to a book in Weston Library (that Florence Scott Atkinson found in 1990), under Liberty Township: "J. Z. Smith was born in Connecticut in 1812; was one of a family of ten children, sons and daughters of John and Judith Smith. Their names were -- Julia, Hiram, John Z., Susan, David, Betsey, Henry, Clinton, Benjamin, and George S.. Benjamin, Hiram, and Betsey, deceased. Mr. Smith {J. Z.} was married in Livingston County, N.Y., in 1841, to Ruth Scott, daughter of Ezekiel and Sarah Scott, who had seven children --Sarah M., (Burnett and Mary, deceased), David, Ruth, Joseph, and Benjamin. Mr. Smith {J. Z.} has been Township Trustee for a number of years.

In addition she passed on to me a handwritten letter by him that indicates that he was born in New Milford, CT in 1812.

RE: Hannah Thurstin
Oh how sad! I never realized there would be so many in one cemetery! I do have some, who are part of this family in California, who don't have marked graves or niches. My Mother and Grandfather for instance. I like your "unmarked grave" rose. Very thoughtful.

Thank you ever so much for the "unmarked grave" photo you used for her! The family is most appreciative.

Thank you for your kindness and the extraordinary walk you took, in an attempt to find her stone. It's appreciated.

Hello Cynthia,

Martin served in the Civil War in the 134th NY Volunteer Infantry.

I had an ancestor who served in the unit, I do research on the 134th and have created a Virtual Cemetery for it, 470 names and counting.

If you want to, please transfer his memorial to me and I'll add his military bio to his memorial.

Thank you for creating his memorial.

Hi Dr. Mahaffey,

First of all let me thank you for all of your time and work taking photos and posting them on Find A Grave. I really appreciate all that you do. If you would be so kind I would love to take over the memorials for my great uncle, his wife and daughter. Thomas Jefferson Harbaugh #93305814, Anna Scott # 10242886, and their daughter Mary Elva Harbaugh # 102473073. Thank you in advance for the transfer if you are so inclined.

Sincerely,
Marilyn Harbaugh
