RE: Capt Edward E Magruder

Thank you for contacting me regarding Edward Magruder. My memorial 85344273 has the only obituary that was available. Look at the bottom of the biography section. The obit was from the Washington Star newspaper. The only place that I know of that has copies of that newspaper (now defunct) is the University of Maryland library and the Rockville, Montgomery County, Maryland library. It has always been my intention to visit one or both, but I seem to have too many other things that get in the way, LOL.

My computer need repair so I am currently using the local library. My references for Edward are at home. I will see if there is other information that I can share with you.

Hope this helps,

RE: Wheaton Gravesite
No problem. It's disappointing when there is no stone.

Peter Short
I had an old family tree that had Peter Short as an ancestor of mine. But, I am not a descendant of John Yerry and Catherine Short. I don't think Peter's son, Zachariah Short has a DAR number, either.

Olde Ulster has an article about Peter Short's capture by the Torie's after the baptism of his grandchild. Have you seen it?

Woodstock Cemetery
I have spent lots of weekends photographing the old section of Woodstock Cemetery. I have been working on a map (so the old section has names and not just numbers.)

I turned in a supplemental DAR application for John Yerry this summer. It takes eight months to find out!

I need to fill out an application for a veteran's stone for him. The caretaker at Woodstock said that he would do that, but he has not. I am not sure that he believed me when I told him that John was a Revolutionary War soldier.

Who is your great-grandfather?

RE: Charles Edward Merchant
I don't have any information about Charles Edward Merchant's headstone. You are correct though it does look like a new headstone. I have been to that cemetery and have seen the headstone myself. This picture of it is one I took. Sorry I can't be of more help.

RE: Sofield

I took photos at Alpine cemetery of the graves Runyon Sofield, Susan Sofield and Sarah Sofield. There are several Sofields in the same area and I posted piuctures for those that had memorials. Because the stones are in bad shape, I asked at the cemetery office for dates of internment. They told me all three Sofields were removed from Baptist cemetery in Perth Amboy and buried in Alpine cemetery on March 14, 1866. I'm not sure that helps you as I have never heard of Baptist cemetery in Perth Amboy. I will try to gather more information.
