I live in Atlanta Ga for 41 years . I have worked on The Melvin Project with Frank Melvin in Bladen County NC. , and the Franklin/Hightower Project in Florida and Georgia. I will be happy to help anyone anyway I can and you are free to use any pictures I have posted. Also have done some extensive research on the Charlie Lankford family of Eatonton Ga.My work with the Lankford and Presley families was at the urging of my wifes Aunt Love Lankford Presley and Uncle Leon Presley who was a great source of Lankford and Presley info on the two families.|

I found this article when I was searching on the web. Our Poitevin ancestors came from France, lived in Charleston, moved near Wilmington, and then sold their land there to move to Sampson County. Antoine Poitevin was my 7th great grandfather. His son Pierre, or Peter was my 6th great grandfather. Pierre's son James was my 5th great grandfather. James was married to Margaret DeVane, daughter of Thomas DeVane and Margaret de Conde. Margaret de Conde DeVane's picture was the painting I posted on Facebook; she was my 5th great grandmother. James's son Isaac was my 4th great grandfather. Isaac was mentioned as being a miller in Revolutionary War records. There was a small battle at Poitevin's Mill or Portervine's Mill in Sampson County. Isaac married Elizabeth Treadwell, her family was from Connecticut. She was born in North Carolina. Isaac and Elizabeth had the following children: Mary born in 1772, Margaret born in 1779, John Treadwell Poitevin born in 1780, Anna born in 1783 and Zilpha born in 1785. Zilpha Poitevin married Adoniram Vann and had at least three children: Adoniram born in 1811, Hettie Catherine Vann born in 1820 and Niram Portervine Vann born in 1824. I think that Hettie is short for Henrietta and Henrietta Catherine is a French name. Adoniram Jr. moved to Georgia, died there and was buried in Florida. Niram lived in Sampson County. Adoniram and Zilpha are names from the Bible. The French Huguenots followed John Calvin and had Bibles before most people did,and they read them thoroughly. My theory is that Adoniram Vann Senior had French Huguenot roots too, probably through his mother as Vann is a Scottish name. Anyway, I haven't found Adoniram Vann Senior's parents, but I am still looking.

Jim, thank you for adding the pictures to John's memorial. If you would be interested, you can send me a copy of the one of him in uniform and I could crop it for you so it is larger.
Thanks again for the help! Vonna
