Bio Photo There are over 98,100 souls buried in Oakwood Cemetery in Richmond, Va. and 11,800 Confederate soldiers give or take a 1,000. The picture on the left Is the Confederate section Oakwood Cemetery taken in 1865. Please DO NOT WASH HEADSTONES!!! You can destroy them by using any kind of soap, bleach, Ajax. I came across a marble stone over 200 years old a few years ago. I went back and somebody had cleaned it. It was all pitted and the details were almost gone and the stone turned gray. Reason you do not clean them. There are chemicals in all modern cleaning materials. They will eat them away faster than the weather. SO LEAVE THEM ALONE!!! If you can't read them DO A RUBBING with paper and pencil. Post the headstone and the rubbing together. I also found out you can use thin aluminum foil using a soft brush and brush lightly over the letters. I'm starting to see where people are rewriting history to fit there agenda.//// F. A. Q. How do I get a relative's memorial transferred to me?
First, Determine if you really need the memorial transferred to you for management. Transferring of management should only be requested If you have extensive changes to make to a memorial. You can add photos and suggest corrections without having to request management. Simply having someone in your family tree is not grounds for a management transfer request. With hundreds of thousands of contributors, we have many overlapping family trees and it would be impossible for all contributors to manage their entire tree. Also, the goal is not to "own" every memorial of those to whom you are related. The ultimate goal should be to have meaningful, accurate memorials that honor those who have passed away, regardless of who created the memorial or who maintains it.

Crum Memorial
Mike...You posted the memorial for George Crum so you have to make the links to his parents. I sent you an edit to do so.

Thank you so much Mike. Have been unable to locate him in Fredericksburg. Also unable to locate any info other than he enlisted in GA, was in Co F 24. Also have a death date of Feb 18, 1863, but unable to get that on Fold3 or Ancestry. Thank you so much again.

Asa Thomas Martin
Hello Mike; When looking at my information again; and I have a lot of it, I got the birth year off. Figure I hit the wrong key. His birth was in 1837. His mother was Lucinda Skinner Martin. She was born on 4th day of October, 1806 and passed away on 16th of March, 1890. She is buried in the Martin Grove Cemetery located in Coosa County Alabama. I would like to sponsor Asa's memorial and link it to his children also. How do I proceed with this? I do know where his son William Martin is buried as well as his daughter Matilda Martin Whetstone. I have not received a reply from you on my previous post as of yet but your help would be greatly appreciated. I'm fairly new at this so please forgive if I make an error in typing.

Asa Thomas Martin
Mike, I am the GGG grandson of Asa Thomas Martin. He was born in 1836 in Coosa County Alabama. He was the son of John Robert Martin and Lucinda Skinner Martin. He was the husband of Mary Mizzles Martin. He was wounded in the Battle of the Seven Pines in June of 1862. His arm was amputated on June 19, 1862 and he died on June 26th, 1862. He left behind his wife Mary and 3 small children, William 5, Matilda 3, and Artissima 1. Matilda Martin Whetstone is my GG grandmother. My family has 38 letters handed down through the generations that Asa wrote to his wife and children. Using find a grave I discovered where he was buried (already knew it was Richmond Virginia because of the letters). The nurse that cared for him also wrote some of the letters for him. She promised my GGG grandmother that she would see to it that he had a proper burial. Her name was Mrs. Joseph McGrudes and the doctor was Thomas P. Daughtry. It is indicated that he is in Plot:Sec,B,Row R, Grave 37. I was wondering if I could get a picture of his marker and if additional information could be added about him(such as his birth and death dates). Please let me know............Jeff Peoples

I do see you have his father linked on his memorial, but as of yet he is not linked on his father's memorial

I have contacted Mrs Kirkland as well so she is aware.

I'm still fairly new to all this, and this was an amazing help for my research on the Davis side of my family.

Mark is my 3rd great grandfather

Robert Tomlin

Do you want to copy the info I have on Robert and I will delete my memorial? I know I'm related but you did your memorial first.
