The photos and information I've found here helped me add over 100 names to my family tree. I hope to make similar contributions which may help others in their own quests, as so many others have helped me.

Use Of My Photos

Mount Olivet Cemetery - Hanover, PA:
I'll no longer be working to transcribe every stone in the cemetery, plot by plot, section by section. I have already spent a ridiculous amount of time cleaning up after other F-A-G members who have half-assed this cemetery for years, and the new photo transcription tool has guaranteed that most of any future time spent will be wasted. The memorial collectors now breeze through with a camera then rush home to create thousands of junk "memorials" with no burial location information, no family links, no inscription information and no additional information of any kind, all while ignoring any graves with a stone that can't be read from the low quality photos they were in such a rush to take.

I'll still make an effort to handle photo requests, but given that there are so many requests generated by incorrect memorials I won't waste much time looking, 35,000 burials on 50 acres is a lot of ground to cover. If an existing photo is of poor quality (even one of my own) and you'd like a better one leave me a message and I'll see what I can do.

My memorials:
I do not scour the internet for obituaries 24/7 nor do I pore over historical records looking for names to add to my "collection". Quality trumps quantity.
The overwhelming majority of my memorials are created from information I interpret to the best of my ability from grave markers. Yes, I visit the grave site, in person. I usually spend time researching how people in the same plot were related. However, I will err, if you spot an error let me know the what and why so I can correct it.

A word about photos:
I require the simple courtesy of attribution. "Photo by Jeff Schneider" and a link to the F-A-G memorial page works just fine. I do send DMCA takedown orders forcing sites to remove unattributed photos. Attribute it or lose it.
Posting someone else's photo with the appearance that it's yours is a jerk move, and should anyone ever have a question about the grave, the plot, or the cemetery, you'd have no answer and they'd have no idea where to look for someone who did.

Another obit

I knew I had another obituary for Sarah and I finally found it. I have uploaded it to her memorial, so you may also want to change the order of the photos. As you read it, you can see my confusion as it contains information somewhat different from the notice you have from the Hanover paper. However, it's obviously the same Sarah.

I also looked up the death certificates for her children, Peter and Susan. Peter's gives her maiden name as Fissel while Susan's gives it as Deardorff. Yet more confusion!

Too bad Sarah died the year before they started keeping death certificates in Pennsylvania!

RE: Susan Yingling Flickinger

Thank you very much for this. I followed the link to Sarah Deardorff Yingling. I didn't know she was also in Mt. Olivet. From looking at Harry Senft's photos of the cemetery, it appears that she is buried with the famly of her daughter, Susan Flickinger.

I have never been able to straighten out this family. It makes me nuts because I have Deardorff, Yingling and Flickinger ancestors and I can't figure out how they are all together in one family. I haven't been able to find Sarah's parents. I also can't find Adam and Sarah in any census.

I think what has thrown me off is that The Yingling Genealogy has her birth as 1819 and Adam's as 1813. That particular book is generally pretty accurate, although I always try to confirm data through actual records. However, I haven't been able to find one single record so far.

Adam and Sarah's children, Peter and Susan, were living with his parents in 1860. They also supposedly had another son named Adam, but I have found no record of him other than the above genealogy. Peter converted to Catholicism and is buried at St. Aloysius Cemetery in Littlestown. I just submitted a link to his mother.

Something is totally off about what I have for this family. If you have any thoughts, I'd love to hear them. I assume you live in or near Hanover? My entire family is from there, but I live in Massachusetts, which makes the research a bit harder.

Hi Jeff,

I don't have at all, actually. Just going by the "New York" on his headstone. But, that may only be that he joined the military from New York State. I have heard that the state, if shown on the headstone, if a government headstone, shows which state he lived in at the time of his enlistment. So, go ahead with the edit, and I'll activate them.

Thanks for the input!
