|In 2009, I began documenting and photographing the graves at Mt. Elliott Cemetery, the oldest cemetery in Detroit. There are an estimated 75,000 to 100,000 people buried at Mt. Elliott and while my efforts will not document everyone, I am trying to do my part to memorialize those who are buried there.|
If you have a correction, addition, relationship link or biographical information to add to one of my memorials, please click on the edit tab and choose the Suggest a Correction option. I research every suggestion I receive so please include your source and documentation with your suggestion.
If you are requesting a photograph of a grave at Mt. Elliott and the memorial does not have the plot information, please call Mt. Olivet Cemetery at (313) 365-5650 and get the information, then post that information with your request. The cemetery is simply too large to locate a grave without the plot information.

Thanks for going out and taking a picture of the stone and correcting the birthdate. The only files I could find with her birth info was by calculating back from her death date. It was good to see that she had a stone with the accurate information. As usual you have been very helpful with my family at Mt Elliott.

YES! Debbie you are absolutely correct! I don't know how that happened.
I'm not sure how to transfer to another cemetery. do you just creat another memorial at that cemetery and then delete the old one?

thank you so much for the Elizabeth Nolan tombstone pic. Also, I've modified Michael and Magdalena Hammang's memorials to reflect NO STONE.

Birthplace listed as Ireland.
Born in 1862. Family emigrated from Galway to US in 1864.
Age at death given as 17 yrs., 2 mos, 23 days (birth date calculated from death date of Dec 28 1879).
The family is from Galway. Still looking for his baptismal record in Ireland but family only lived in Galway and other children born there. If you prefer, Ireland would be fine as well.

Thanks Debbie. I'm glad you agree that the information is probative enough to include in the bio about Michael Daly, my great-grandfather. A few years ago I made contact with a family member through Ancestry that sent me a transcript of an interview done in 1967 with a grandson of William & Mary Daly. This grandson said: "...my grandmother's name was Lester before she married my grandfather. She came from Newfoundland and she had been married before. She had two sons, Pat and Mike. They were half-brothers to my uncles and my father but they took Daly as their last name. My grandfather took them in as his own." I have searched for records in Newfoundland as well as Michigan but haven't yet found any more information.

The Daly Family Bible has a printing date of 1836. Transcribed on the inside cover: "Michael Daly's Bible inscribed to him by his kind mother this 6th day of Nov 1878". The entries of the 1st page of the Family Record is in ink & in script & appears to be written during that time: "William S(?) Daly & Mary Daly married Nov 26 1842 A.D., Patrick Dormody born 13th Sept 1839, Michael Dormody born 15th August 1841" followed by a list the births of the other Daly children Mary A Daly, John William Daly, James Daly, William Lester Daly & Thomas Lester Daly.

I have a Daly Family Bible that shows this. Mary Lester was married before her marriage to William Daly and brought two sons into the marriage, Patrick Dormody & Michael Dormody. Though there was no mechanism to adopt children at that time, William Daly took the children as his own and they used the name Daly. The marriage record (Druin Collection) on Nov 27, 1842, between William and Mary appears to say (it's in script & in Latin & is hard to read) that she was the widow of Michael Dormody. Patrick was born in 1839 & Michael in 1841, before this marriage. I can send you a scan of this bible page if you like.
