You have no idea how excited I was when I found that you had answered my request for a photo of Thomas Rankin's grave marker.

My father, Leonard Reeves, was born and raised in Allerton, and his father, Jesse Rankin Reeves, was the Sheriff there for a time. My cousin is the one who holds hour grandfather's Sheriff's badge.

Thank you so much for filling my request.

I think it's very possible their mother is there too. I wil try to get to the local archives to see if I can find that info. It's obviously a pretty big plot, so would like to know who all is there.

I found the family information on Joseph Fountain, although often these things aren't totally correct. It shows his wife as Elizabeth C. Hardesty. And it shows a daughter, Charity Catherine Clementine, born March 2, 1864 in Davis County, Iowa. She died there in 1871. The picture I have of the tombstone looks like "Dau of J & E Fountain". It is an old marker, but that E definitely doesn't look like an S, although it is more difficult to read than the J.
Dan Gotheridge says the story of Charity Catherine Zoe Clementine was told by his great-grandmother Etta Fountain Hellyer and her uncle (brother of her dad) John Fountain.
So I need to tie her to her parents. One of the sons, William Fountain, is buried in Troy, Davis County, Iowa and I have his memorial #. I do have Elizabeth's obit, which names all the children and tells where they live. So I may be able to add more in the long run. They had 13 total children.

Can you tell me how to access Davis County death records? Maybe I could find Zabed Fountain or his wife Lovina or the one son, William. William was 7 in the 1850 Perry Township, Davis County Iowa Census. Zebulon/Zabed was 47 and Lovina was 45. There were 3 daughters (Rebecca, Catherine, Eliza), but I would have no idea about married names. Dan once found one of the daughters with her father living with the family, but he lost the site. I've never been able to find it again. By the 1880s many of the next generation were moving into Kansas and Oklahoma to get land. This happened with one of Joseph Fountain's sons...along with some of the other families to whom Dan Gotheridge is related. It could have certainly happened with Zabed's.
By the way, Dan has a great-uncle named Franklin Curtis Fountain who made the move to Oklahoma and later moved all the way to Los Angeles. He is buried in Inglewood Park Cemetery, but they say they do not subscribe to Find a Grave. So I can't actually see the gravesite unless I pay them $25...which I would do for a grandfather, but not a great-uncle. I have all his information, though. It's just that Find a Grave will often connect you to other family members with the memorial number. I guess that cemetery is just too big.
I'll try to check out Joseph's wife's full name. We often call people by their first name when they were actually called something else.

Thanks again for your help with the Fountains. The additions to Joseph and Mathew aren't showing up yet, but I'm sure they will. I did go to the Iowa grave website you mentioned. I believe I had seen it, but I very carefully went through it. I knew the ones in Davis county..all of whom I believe are relatives. We don't seem to really have a connection to those in Johnson County, but I printed the names to keep a reference handy. I have actually been to the old Fountain graveyard in Davis County Iowa...up on a hill on private property. If you look at the list of stones there, you'll see one that simply says CCZC. I believe she's the baby daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth Fountain, who are buried there. The family story says they let their children name she became Charity Catherine Zoe Clementine. CCZC. Family stories need to be preserved.

It looks great. I appreciate it so much. Would I be able to go to Joseph and Mathew's sites and add similar notes? I do have some family information about some of Joseph's children. Eventually I hope to be able to add some family to Mathew. But I will have to locate his widow (Emanda?) which is iffy. I believe Mathew had a son named Joseph D. Fountain who was in the Civil War almost the entire time, but I will have to hunt for him, too. Obviously, I relish a project.

We do not know the parents of Moses, Joseph, Mathew and a brother who is buried somewhere in Davis County, Iowa whom I can't locate (Zabed/Zebadiah). The brothers were together when they homesteaded in Iowa, but we have no parent names. Even the births of Mathew and Joseph in Belmont County, Ohio have left no names of parents to be found. Moses and Zabed were born in New York, but again, no parents names. The original parent or grandparent deserted from the French army during the Revolution and stayed in America. His French name was Mathieu LaFontaine. His name was Americanized to Mathew Fountain, but we just can't find him. So there's no way to connect to parents for any of the brothers.
Thanks for the help in listing the names at the 3 gravesite of Moses, Joseph and Mathew. It at least connects the 3, which I thought was important.

Re: Not only John Fountain, but also Thomas Fountain, Moses Fountain, Clarissa Owen and Margaret Bollman

Thank you Doris for fixing this. In trying to be in a hurry, I kept entering the uncle Mathew. So I was getting ready to try to contact someone to get him off the sibling list. But when I tried to list Stephen, who is actually our grandfather, he did not show up in the Promise City Iowa cemetery at I attempted to add Stephen and Helen Scott Fountain at that site. I am just learning as I go along. But, again, thanks so much for deleting Uncle Mathew and adding Stephen. You must have quite a job.
