RE: Prudence Martin
You are right there is no middle name or initial on the stone. I think it would be OK to leave it off.
You can add the story to the memorial. Other family members might enjoy the story.
What is involved in managing a memorial?

RE: Prudence Martin
I am the Great granddaughter of Prudence & Wm H. Martin. I went to Hop Cemetery and looked at the stone of Prudence. I believe that stone belongs to Prudence & William H. Martin not William E. Martin. Below is the Info I have:
William H. Martin by Bethel Wesner
"I am afraid I cannot find the address of any of the men that was in the 1st Battery with me for I have not seen or heard from any of them since we was all discharged at Louisville, KY. on the 15 Nov. 1965." ... "P.S. While in the Army I always signed my name William Martin. That is the way it is on my Discharged, after I came home I got to inserting H. for middle name to prevent mistakes in mail matters as there was a Wm. Martin at Campbellsburg that came during the war and our mail age goy mixed and I assumed the H. to prevent mistakes." The above is a quote from a letter dated June 16, 1878 to Milo Stevens & Co. regarding the address of a Doctor connected with the war.
According to Lela Martin Guthrie, William Martin was born in London, England. Supposedly he was of royalty and had decided to marry a commoner. His father was opposed to it and would not accept so William was disowned. He was a young man when he came to this country as a stow-away on a cattle boat.
He settled near Livonia, Indiana when he first came. The story is told on him that he got a job working for a farmer to cut weed out of the corn. He didn't know corn from weeds so the farmer showed him the corn. When he came in for dinner the farmer ask him how he got along. He replied that the first thing he did was to go through and cut out all them ole vines so he could find the weeds. He had cut out all the pumpkin vines. It is known that he worked for George Gardner and this taken place on his farm. He later married the Gardners oldest daughter.
"William H. Martin age 24 years and Prudence Zipporah Gardner age 26 were married December 7th. 1865 at 11 o'clock A.M. by the Rev. John Aughey. U.S.A." This information is from an old piece of paper with one corner missing. In the family is an 1858 Bible given by W.E.Bass to Wm. & Prudence when they were married.
The 1880 census lists Wm. H. Martin as a druggist. His grandchildren tell me he was medical doctor and made most of his own medicine from herbs. His medical book is still in the family. When he had to make a call at night he would ride one horse and take his medical pouch, His son Wm. Henry, would ride another horse and take a lantern. He had big bottles, some quarts and some half gallons for his medicines. The bottles were all glass, including the stoppers. He also ran a store in corner across the road from Mt. Carmel Christian Church in Brown twp., Washington Co., Indiana.
They later bought and moved to the farm that was later known as the Thad Martin(his son) place and now the Charley Green place. They dug a well there around 1883 or so. Years later that well supplied all the drinking water for the pupils at Clifty school. By the time I can remember it that well was covered and had a pump in it, but the generations before me remembered it was an open well and the water was brought up in a bucket.
William H. Martin died in the log house that stood where Uncle Thad's house now stands.

:) I was not the person who requested the photo. I merely added the memorial taken from the cemetery book published by the Washington County Historical Society. I am sure if you looked for one and it could not be found then there is no stone.
Have a great day

John W and Hattie Barnett Green
THeir pages look great. To answer your question. That raises a good question. I just looked up my list of Barnetts at Hop Cemetery that Salem H S sent me years ago and John W is listed as the son of Hattie Barnett Green. I just looked on the 1880 census and his name is not mentioned so he died earlier in 1880.Hattie and James were married in 1879 as sourced in Indiana Marriage Collection. If the date is correct she had John a year before there marriage. Maybe he wasn't James child. I have found no reference to an earlier marriage. I didn't even know he existed until I was looking up her grave. I have no one living who would know. I don't remember my grandfather Paynter speaking of any Barnett cousins. I'll do some digging. Do you think we should leave him as a Barnett or go with the Green. Is he buried near his mother? Is James listed on the back of her tombstone or listed with any Greens on SHC master list of Hop? Had better go. Sherry

John W and Hattie Barnett Green
Yes, delete Hattie F Barnett # 55800529 and photo. Hattie E Green has her own memorial # 76129707 which you made on 7 Sept 2011. Would you add Barnett to her name. You just linked her son John W Barnett(Green) to her. Would you change John W Barnett to John W Green # 55717312. His info is born March 7, 1878 Campbellsburg died March 25 1880 Campbellsburg.. Father is James E Green. I do not know where James is buried but he is probably at the Hop with his wife. His name might be on the other side of her pillar tombstone. He is not listed on any census after 1880 he worked on the railroad. Thank you for your time and effort. Sherry
