THE RECORDING OF A CEMETERY
BY THELMA GREENE REAGAN
Today we walked where others walked
On a lonely, windswept hill;
Today we talked where others cried
For loved ones whose lives are stilled.
Today our hearts were touched
By graves of tiny babies;
Snatched from the arms of loving kin,
In the heartbreak of the ages.
Today we saw where the grandparents lay
In the last sleep of their time;
Lying under the trees and clouds -
Their beds kissed by the sun and wind.
Today we wondered about an unmarked spot;
Who lies beneath this hollowed ground?
Was it a babe, child, young or old?
No indication could be found.
Today we saw where Mom and Dad lay.
We had been here once before
On a day we'd all like to forget,
But will remember forever more.
Today we recorded for kith and kin
The graves of ancestors past;
To be preserved for generations hence,
A record we hope will last.
Cherish it, my friend; preserve it, my friend,
For stones sometimes crumble to dust
And generations of folks yet to come
Will be grateful for your trust.

Thank you so much for adding photos of the headstones of my Waterman ancestors! I really appreciate it! :)
Thank you so much for posting the very nice photos of Mary's headstone... including the one where you could see the location of her grave in relation to her husband, James' grave! By the way, how did you add their names at the bottom? Did you do that on Photoshop?

Fantastic, that would be so kind of you to get that picture, thank you! Mary and James are my (step) gg. grandparents and I would love to see where they are buried and research to learn more about them!
Thank you so much for creating Mary's memorial!

Oh my gosh. I never replied. I am so embarrassed. I've been taking care of my mother who has dementia and I'm just not taking care of things like this. I am so sorry. Thank you for your information and I really appreciate your help. I'll keep digging when I get a chance. Thanks again,Vickie

Thank you so much for letting us use the photo of his gravestone.
I think that is the same person. I must have had the first and middle name swapped. Good catch, thank you!

Thank you for the photo of S W Hutchins tombstone. The Boone/Nance Genealogical Society is working on a book of Civil War Vets who once lived in Boone County, Nebraska. With your permission we would like to include his tombstone photo in the book. Please let me know either way.
