I have contacted Sandra Shaw of Sutherland Springs Historical Museum. She is driving to the cemetery herself to verify the headstone is still there. I will post regarding her findings.
As of 24 September, the headstone is still sitting along Highway 160 West of Walsenburg CO.

The sheriff in Walsenburg, Huerfano County, Colorado was contacted and they went out and saw it and contacted the family in Texas. The family says their headstone is in the cemetery and have no idea what the other one is. I don't know if theirs is actually there or if they even checked, but I would imagine they did. It's strange that there would be one exactly like theirs...same name, same dates, and same style that someone would go to the expense of making and leaving so far away. Big mystery! My instincts tell me it is the actual one from Texas. I still feel like it should be retrieved and sent to the family, but I sure don't want to get into any trouble over it. I can't find anyone else so far with the same name, dates, etc. I will leave the photo in his memorial and the headstone alone unless any further information surfaces....if it ever does. Any ideas or thoughts are welcome! Thanks for checking back.
