Florant Bastien (1832 - 1920)
I have found a copy of Florant Bastien's passport dated 1891 which lists his place of birth as "Dreibrunnen, Lorraine." This passport is for a trip to France with the intention or returning to his home in Mason County, IL. In 1891 Lorraine was under German domain, and the village called Driebrunnen in German appears to correspond with the French name for the village of Troisfontaines, Moselle, Lorraine.

My interest in Florant Bastien arrises because my earliest documentation of a Swassing in the US was the older brother of my ancestor Joseph Swassing working on Florant's farm in 1860. Peter Swassing appears there as "Peter Swassoen." And the date of immagration for Peter Swassing is similar to the date for Florant Bastien.

That's all I got as a lead right now for Peter Swassing. There is documentation of both Peter and Florant in the Civil War. And then after the Civil War Peter moves to Carroll County, Missouri with his wife Sarah Pelham, also from Mason County, where he raises her children from a prior marriage to one of the Davenports, also from Mason county. Also an orphaned Godby, Theordore, and an orphaned Swiger or Swager, both from Mason County and both seem to be sons of Pelham sisters orphaned by a typhus epidemic and/or the war.

My direct ancestor, Joseph Swassing makes his first appearance in the census of 1870 there working on the farm of one of the Williamson's who was also a war veteran and was also from Mason County.

If you have any information about the family of Florant Bastien in France, and his trip to America, or if you know of anybody who does, I would be greatly interested in that.

Also, if you desire image files of the original documents that I've found on Ancestry.com, or if you know anyone who does, I would be happy to help.

Sincerely

MichaelJohn Swassing
