Averil Hartley Mosher Merritt and I started in 2009 with Find A Grave and and are now adding information to our families in Iowa, Nebraska, South Dakota, Kansas, Texas, Oklahoma and other parts of the United States.|
Carlyle grew up on a farm 5 miles North of Maquoketa, Iowa. His family roots date back to New York City (Rye, New York) where his early family owned 40 acres on the coast leased to the government prior to the evolutionary war for a navel base. Later this family moved to eastern Iowa on farm land in 1836.
Carlyle's mother Viola Cooley Merritt's family dates back to Vermont (Cooley-Fisher) where her grandfather was a railroad worker who came to Iowa as one of the first employees of the Rock Island railroad and was involved in driving the golden spike in Utah when joining of the east and western railroads. The Vermont family ties the Fisher families from that Colchester, VT area. It includes Rev. David Fisher (Last half of 1700's ), Henry Barney Fisher 1781-1815, Enos Van Ness Fisher (June 1814-Oct 1883.)
Averil was born and raised in the Salem, Iowa area and continues to be involved with Carlyle in the Merritt Computer business.
Averil's father's family name is Mosher, part of American history back to 1632 when family members came to this country on the ship "JANE". She grew up in a rebuilt log cabin located in Henry County Iowa built by her great grandfather Alonzo Mosher on the second oldest family farm in Iowa.
Averil's mother, Justine Hartley Mosher's family name is Hartley and dates back to Edward Hartley in 1682. We are just getting started with this family history and going over many pages of hand written pages by grandson of Norton D. Hartley, George Nathan Hartley, born April 12, 1844. Her grandfather Lindley Hartley, farmed the Pine Ridge Farm near Salem, Iowa until his death in 1917.
We are are adding information to our families that have their roots in mid west and the east coast. Those family names include Merritt, Irwin, Shoaff, Mosher, Watts, Barton, Hartley, Masden, Cooley and other related families.
We have been involved in our business in the computer industry located in Mason City, IA. We have compiled the Merritt and Mosher histories in computerized scrap book style along with the genealogical history, each book containing about 300 pages of B&W, tintype and color photos dating back to the 1800s.
Even though We do not have time to collect photos in our area we give credit to those that have done such a wonderful job in taking photos.

I've transferred this memorial to you. Great pictures that you've added. (My father grew up in South Dakota about the same time frame as your family photo.) Happy Trails.

Thanks for the note - I've deleted the dupe memorial.

Hi! Can you please add the photo request for Kenneth Fread? This is how I keep track of the photos that I take for other Find A Grave members.
P.S. I would have loved to come see all of the MGs, but if I had come, then you, and about 50 others who had photo requests at Oakwood Memorial Park, would not have received their new photos. I still have my first MG "Safety Fast" brochure from about 1972 (and a whole bunch more).

I noticed in your profile that Carlyle's family was involved in the "evolutionary" war. Ace

Hi! Photos posted for her burial plot at Oakwood Memorial Park in Ottawa, Illinois.
Kenneth L. Fread, 1927 - 2003
If you create the memorial, if one does not already exist, and add the photo request, I will post the photos that I took of his grave.
P.S. If you ever want to give the MG J away I would be happy to become the custodian. : - )

I'm so sorry it's taken me so long to respond via email. Last week was unbearably hot here and I spent most of my time in back just trying to keep things alive. Catching up this week and I haven't forgotten you. It wouldn't hurt to send something to the .socal.rr.com email address as a reminder, though! Today we have high winds . . .
