Exum Thomas Cox
I have the old family Bible with many names and dates. I am a direct descendant of Exum through my mother. If you would consider transferring this memorial to me, I hope to fill out the line.
Thank you for your work.

Obituary; John Wood

John Wood, ex-commissioner of Sullivan Co. Indiana and one of its most prosperous farmers and highly esteemed citizens, was killed by lightining at 1:00 pm. on Sunday, Aug 10, 1902. He and his wife were on there way home from church service, the approching storm caused them to drive to the home of there son, JH. Wood who lived near the church. Severial friends had also driven in and out of the rain and after putting there horses in the barn, Mr. wood and four other men remained there out of the heavy rain. While they were talking togather, the lighting struck the barn, killing Mr. Wood instantly. The four other men were seriously affected and a horse was killed.

John Wood was the son of Garrett and Fanny Wood and was born in Sullivan County New York. His parents removed to Indiana early in 1840 and setteled in Gibson County. After the death of his parents and three other members of his family he and his only sister, Mrs. Ann Curry came to Sullivan County Indiana where he has lived the last 45 years being spent on his present farm, one and one half miles west of Farmersburg.
Before becoming a farmer Mr. Wood assisted in building the E. and T.H. railroad. He also worked at the carpenter trade. he served as a commissioner of this county from 1895 to 1898 and was always instrumental
in bringing forward every device for the best interest. For the past 26 years he has been a faithful, consistent member of the Friendship Baptist Church being one of its trustees at the time of his death. In April 1857 he was married to Elizabeth Clark who with there family of five children survive him. One son, Charles A. age 23 years died in 1890. two of his sons J.H. and Bert reside near the homestead. Clemit L. and W.P. live near Hymera and his only daughter Mrs. Perry Morgan live near Cory Ind. Uncle John, as he was called in his community, was noted for his excellent judgement and many times his advice and councel was sought and needed by those who appreciated his sterling worth. In reviewing the history of his life we feel that we are justifide in saying his was a finished life for he died as he lived, a beloved husband a revered father a staunch friend a good neighbor and a noble christian.
