Bio and Links
Bio Photo We live in a small town in Iowa and members of the Pioneer Cemetery Commission for our county. We have been interested in genealogy for several years and spend a lot of time in Graveyards and Cemeteries taking pictures, taking notes, just piecing the families together.
The peace and serenity found in these old cemeteries is our reward!

We have come across cemeteries where the headstone markers have disappeared... they are unreadable, broken, buried, or have fallen etc . The Cemeteries are so old that there are not any other records of the people resting there. When these cemeteries does that person's existence!
We would like to thank all of you for your contributions to preservation of these cemeteries.

If there is a memorial we have added, that is not in our family, we will consider a transfer of the memorial to you.
Please use the Edit tab,(upper right hand corner of the memorial) Please do this on every memorial that you want transferred or a correction on and please include your ID number.

If ever you decide you no longer want to maintain the records please transfer your records to someone who has an active account and willing to take over the records. There are many out there willing to do this!
It would also be a good idea to leave someone instructions on how to make these transfers should you go inactive without warning.
If the need arises Andrew has accepted the stewardship over the memorial in our care.
Thank You, Mo & Dave

Columbus City Cemetery
Hi, I was wondering if you two are working on photographing this cemetery? I see there are a lot of photo requests and was going to try and fulfill them this weekend, but if you already have the photos on a hard drive somewhere, then of course I don't want to duplicate things and waste my time and gas :) If you're familiar with this cemetery, is there an office or interment list?

thank you
You did an excellent job photographing the Gates Cemetery in OH. Finding it in the brush and moving the stones out of their stack couldn't have been easy. I love tiny cemeteries and this one would have been lost but for your effort. Thank you.

RE: Mt. Zion Franks Memorial
I was born in Mt. Zion, KY, in my grandfather William Barnet Franks' home, a direct descendant of John Martin Franks, everything Beulah Franks has told me agrees with everything that I have ever heard from family members, so I'll still accept her as the authority, besides I also live in Frankfort, Ky as does she. Until there is documented proof of some kind that Jacob Franks of North Carolina is the father of John Martin Franks, it is not correct or truthful to say that he is, as the memorial in the Mt. Zion Cemetery says. John Martin Franks' father could have been any number of men named Franks of the correct generation, Jacob Franks was not the only Franks male in the world of the correct age, even in just North Carolina. His father could even have been a man not named Franks, he could have taken his mother's surname, or he could even have just taken the name Franks at random. By saying Jacob Franks could or could not have been John Martins father is in reality saying nothing about who his father really is, you can just as easily and truthfully say that George Washington could or could not have been his father. And that is the whole point, unless you or someone you know has documented proof that Jacob Franks is the father and Mary Ann Ashley is the mother of John Martin Franks, it cannot be said truthfully that they are. The memorial in the Mt Zion cemetery is not proof, it was placed there generations after the fact on the whim of one individual, my 2nd cousin, Lloyd Wayne Franks. Wayne was the adopted (as an infant) son of my great Uncle Connie, W. C. Franks, he was an only child, and he was always seen as "odd" by the rest of the family. I think he may have put the memorial in the cemetery to make himself feel more a part of a heritage he was not born into. Wayne died of AIDS over 10 years ago with no heirs. John Martin Franks is not buried in that cemetery, it was not yet in existence when he died. He was probably buried in the Baptist church's old cemetery behind the church, if he was buried in a church's cemetery at all. The Baptist Church's old cemetery was vandalized and mostly destroyed about 20 years ago, most all the headstones were hauled off and dumped in a nearby creek, I believe. I don't know if the old cemetery was ever restored or not, but I know an attempt was going to be made.

Mt. Zion Franks Memorial
There is no evidence to support the idea that John Martin Franks was the son of Jacob Franks & Mary Ann Ashley, so, of course, there can not be any documents to prove he was not. The complete lack of evidence is proof he was not the son of Jacob Franks of North Carolina. There is no evidence of any kind to support even the existence of John Martin Franks before a deed for real estate he bought in Fort Detroit was recorded in 1781 (see Burton's history of Detroit), and when he was recorded in the Fort Detroit census of 1782. It is not even known exactly when he was born. He probably came from England, or eastern Canada, or possibly somewhere else entirely. The AUTHORITY on the family of John Martin Franks & Elizabeth Lail is Beulah Franks at .
As far as the memorial itself, it is in the Mt.Zion Cemetery which belongs to the Mt Zion Baptist Church. Lloyd Wayne Franks was "well-off" and an influential member of this Church, it was founded by the Franks family. He was also the official custodian of the cemetery, like his father W. C. Franks before him, which is how the memorial came to be there in the first place. In order for the memorial to be removed, the church would have to be petitioned, and convinced that it would be in their best interest to have the memorial removed, I do not have the time, money, or energy to initiate or sustain this procedure, do you? If you have questions, contact me at Thanks Gary

Mt. Zion Franks Memorials
The Franks family memorials in the Mt. Zion, Kentucky cemetery contains errors. No one, I repeat, NO ONE knows where John Martin Franks was born or where he came from before he appeared in Detroit in 1782. He most definitely was NOT Jacob Franks' son. Those memorials were put there by Mr. Lloyd Wayne Franks (my 2nd cousin) in the mistaken belief that John M. was Jacobs' son, he should not have done it, it is causing much confusion in the Franks geneology.
