I researched our family trees for about 3 years about 40 years ago. Then I worked outside the home for many years and just did not have any time for ancestry information. Then about 3 years ago I decided to look on the internet and see what I could find. Oh my, I now have over 10,000 people in 2 trees. Sometimes difficult to find enough time to stay current and yet look for new information. I really enjoy the search. I am supposed to be retired but like to keep busy.

Thanks for telling me. I have removed the request since there is no headstone to be found. I appreciate you taking the time to get back to me.

RE: Old Salem Cemetery
Jane, I found records (land grants, plat maps, war records from 1812 and the Blackhawk war, etc) that show my Davis ancestors living in that area c.1830 and 2 Davis brothers who served in War of 1812 (when Black Partridges' village was burned at the mouth of Crow Creek), then they filed land claims along the creek (1817). There are several books on the history of that area that I found online and downloaded. Unfortunately that computer crashed, maybe from all the stuff that was downloaded and I haven't been able to retrieve. I did print some things. When I get more time I'll find the info and email you about how to find the info. One book is "Records of the Olden Time; or, Fifty Years on the Prairies" by Spencer Ellsworth. He was the publisher of the Lacon Home Journal in the late 1800's. It's an interesting book. I printed a couple chapters and keep it handy! I think some of the plat maps show Foster properties. I'll let you know. Lori

RE: Rachel Chambers
Rachel and Alverda's stones were nearly impossible to spot. If I hadn't insisted on crawling around in the underbrush I wouldn't have found them either. You've already done so much and helped so many people. Your list is the only reason I was able to find my relatives and I can't thank you enough. Especially since I started with absolutely nothing.

Thank you for offering to transfer. I'd be happy to take over management of her memorial. I have a TON of information about her. I'm related to the Ramps as well. My family tree is beginning to look like a wreath, which is rather worrisome. LOL

RE: John Walker Davis
Jane, Thank you for your message. We're still trying to find more info on John Walker, especially DOB. I don't know if that info is in the cemetery records. I lost Mr. Buck's phone # and I'm so far away that it's hard for me to research. I hope to have more time soon to get back to work on this. I believe that there are other unmarked graves for Davis and Van Dusen family in Old Salem. Thanks again, Lori

RE: Rachel Chambers
Hi Jane :-) My husband and I made two separate trips to the cemetery last fall. If you remember, most of the Chambers graves were clustered under a tree with brambles and nearly knee high weeds etc.. This is no insult to the farmer who takes care of the cemetery voluntarily. It would have been impossible to mow. So on the first trip I noticed her stone. It was laying down under the overgrowth. We also noticed the rest in that group but I couldn't get pictures because of the vegetation. We came back two weeks later prepared LOL. My husband pruned (took him an hour) and I was able to photograph them. When I got home I used my editing software to turn the pictures into near-negatives. I remember you and I discussing how to get good photos off old stones a few years ago, so thought I'd mention that tip. Plus I learned this week that a blacklight flashlight works wonders. I ordered one as I'm trying to read every marker in my mother's family cemetery. I found two people buried there that were not on the WPA index. The engraving is disappearing at an alarming rate and if the stones are not read, they could easily be lost forever.

My husband and I are so appreciative of all the people who help care for Old Salem. We plan on cleaning up the Chambers section (and any other that might need some help) every year. I have a lot of research to do in Lacon as most of my Dad's family came from there. A bonus is that it's such a beautiful area. I appreciate all your help in sending the list and answering questions a couple of years ago. Let me know if you have questions so I can return the favor. and hopefully we can stay in touch.
