While working on Ancestry I came across your contributions to Find A Grave. I met your Grandmother, Mary Jane at some of the family reunions in Wenatchee and later at Joannes in Snohomish. My grandfather was Fred Smith. I used to live in CA and my Aunt Merlene would take us to the reunions. My husband and I have lived in Coeur d'Alene for the past 8 years. We were able to visit Norma several times in Spokane. My email is and we would love to hear from you. Joanne B.

RE: 37387547 Sharon Hatcher
Thanks, Gail! Jessica Haynes is my niece. My mother lost Sharon at birth. Her birthdate is actually 17 Feb 1947 and her death date is 18 Feb 1947. Should you be interested in transferring Sharon, my big sister's memorial to me, I would be delighted. We are working on raising funds to place a headstone for Sharon Jean.

Thanks again,

Martha Hatcher Welling

Dear Gail,

Thank you for finding the grave site for Sharon Hatcher and photographing it. I have a sister named Sharon Hatcher who was buried in that cemetery but she was born and died in 1947, not 1950, as this memorial states. I am just wondering if this is my sister's site or another Sharon Hatcher.

Do you know how I could verify this?

Thanks again,

Martha Hatcher Welling

Gowey Stone Photo
Hi Gail -

I noticed your notation "The headstone appears to state the name John Franklin Gowey,Dec. 7, 1846, died March 12, 1900. Age 54 Years. No other words visible" below the photo of John Franklin Gowey's gravestone. Might I suggest that "Dec. 7, 1846, died" is actually "Entered Into Rest."

Thank you for posting the pictures!

Thanks for taking this photo so quickly and for getting both a great close up as well as the whole stone!

RE: Wrong spelling??

Can you give me the dates on the marker for Robert John Ord? I'll see if I can find any information on him and see if you need to contact Rob Minteer and have him correct the spelling. I've dealt with him before, he's very nice.

RE: Doran Hougham burial site

Thank you for taking the picture.
I am getting confused with the terms merging and such. Are you saying someone else has a duplicate memorial or mine is a duplicate? Trying to understand?

RE: Doran Hougham burial site

I am family. I know how some older cemeteries are easily merged because they are side by side and in time the division line becomes blurry. I am guessing you are saying I need to change the cemetery name on the memorial? No problem if such. Just trying to make the correct entry.

That was sure fast!

Thank you for the pictures of May's grave stone and the picture of the beautiful tree that is there, is she buried close by the tree?

Thanks again

Thanks! I just made you a friend too! Where do you live? Where is Thurston. Washington?

My husband and I loved doing that too, especially reading the stones.

I'm so glad you have the attitude of making your photos beautiful. There are some volunteers that actually leave bird poop and leaves on the stone to guilt family members to take care of them! gasp. Lots of us carry a "cemetery kit" in the trunk. I have a bucket with small clippers, a water spray bottle, a roll of automotive paper towels, a whisk broom, a bottle of graphite powder (to make some stones legible - it washes right off), a pen and small tablet to take notes on barely legible inscriptions, and an small folding umbrella for those stones in perma-mottled sun/shade. You are the second person I've heard of who carries a spray of fake flowers. I need to get one! It's a wonderful kindness. These memorials are "permanent" and often the only one many of these people will ever have, and so I like to make them as good as I can - "doing unto others" you know... :)

Ok. Well, good chatting and so glad to see such a quality volunteer start up!

RE: Welcome
Yes, a context photo is always wonderful. I have only recently been doing that, inspired by another volunteer. A closeup of the headstone is invaluable but the context is meaningful. I also do a group shot of family groups. You are sure learning on the fast track! :)

RE: Welcome
I've left flowers and added edits from your photos! Some birth dates and spouse connections. I hope the manager of these makes the edits!

RE: Welcome
Yes, it's such an honor to do. I especially am blessed by putting up memorials and photos of the soldiers, the babies, the homeless/paupers. You have accomplished a lot for the short time you have been among us! So glad to have you aboard and active!
