RE: Atholl A. Whitworth (Ott)
Hi Allen,

I finally got a chance to go to the genealogy library and look up Atholl's obituary on microfilm. This is an exact copy:

----------

WHITWORTH, ATHOLL A., Fri., June 9, 1995, dearest brother of Delmer E., Russell L., James T., Harry A., Richard S., William J., Sidney G. and Howard D. Whitworth and the late Janet Marie Whitworth, dear brother-in-law, uncle, great uncle, cousin and friend.

Service Mon., June 12, 12 noon at the NEW COLLIERS FUNERAL HOME, 3400 No. Lindbergh Blvd. Interment Fee Fee Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the charity of your choice. Visitation 3 - 9 p.m. Sunday.

(11 Jun 1995; St. Louis Post-Dispatch)

----------

Hope this helps!

Lynn

No idea. Try John Schuck-click on his name below the cemetery picture. He is local and active in F.A.G and Benton County genealogy.
Good luck, Bob

RE: Atholl A. Whitworth (Ott)
Hi Allen,

I'm glad you wrote. It turns out I had a MAJOR mistake on the memorial for Atholl A. Whitworth.

I assumed that Ott was a married surname or a maiden name because of the way it was engraved on the stone. Since it turned out Atholl was born a Whitworth, I was under the impression that (Ott) might have been a surname from a marriage that ended in divorce.

I went back and took another look at census records. Atholl was listed as a SON in 1930. From experience, I know it's not all that unusual to find incorrect genders on census records, especially with unusual names. However, in the time since I created the original memorial, the 1940 census was released. I had not checked it until today. Atholl was again listed as a SON in 1940. Looks like the census taker was right, and I was the one who made the mistake!

Does being a male match what you have in your family genealogy information for Atholl? I'm still puzzled by what the (Ott) on the stone means. A nickname, maybe? Any ideas?

I found a listing for Atholl in the obituary index of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch newspaper. It is available on microfilm at the headquarters branch of the St. Louis County library. You might want to see what it says. An obit for ATHOLL A. WHITWORTH was published on 11 Jun 1995. Unfortunately, the Post obits from that era rarely contain much genealogical information, but it would be interesting to see what it says.

I will look up the obituary the next time I am at a genealogy library, but that may be a few months. Please let me know if you find it before I do. I'm very curious about this.

In the meantime, I corrected the gender on Atholl's memorial. Thanks again for prompting me to reexamine this bio.
