I'm glad to do it. If you know the newspaper it was published in, could you include information that in the future?

|tombstone2c||RE: Willie Southerland|
I have some information regarding what metals he was awarded and his unit, etc., but will have to look that up. Is there something in particular you are hunting? I do not know for certain the address where he lived in Cambridge City. My grandparents lived there briefly shortly after their marriage. Willie's parents died within a month of each other. Only my grandfather had married at the time, so his 3 siblings came to live with him. That may be when Willie lived at Cambridge City. I think Willie joined the Army not long after his parents deaths. I remember hearing something to that affect. I have a list of all the places and dates where my grandparents lived, including the Cambridge City address. My grandmother had written it many years ago. Will look it up. I'm curious as to which of the Southerland clan you are acquainted with her in Indiana.
For the majority of his life, Uncle Willie never talked about his service in World War II. He had some very horrible experiences on the battlefield and very rarely mentioned the war, even when questioned directly. He would not attend funerals as a result of the war, including those of his brothers. It was only during the last several years that he opened up about some of those experiences. A business man in Richmond, IN., paid all expenses for Willie to return to the beaches of Normandy, France, during the big anniversary of that event a few years back. There were several news articles in the Richmond newspaper (Palladium-Item) covering the trip. He was also interviewed by the History Channel for the documentary they did on veterans of World War II. I did not see the program but was told Willie appeared briefly in the documentary.

Thank you for the inquiry regarding Vannie Southerland (#51958436) & Willie Southerland (#109773106). Yes, I am related by blood to both. Vannie is my great grandfather and Willie is my great uncle. My grandfather is James Floyd Sutherland, who is the oldest child of Vannie & Eliza (Blackwell) Southerland.
Now here is a question for you. I have a cousin named Sherry, whose mother is the oldest child of James Floyd Sutherland. Are you by any chance her? I'm going to laugh myself silly if you are and we have made contact through this site because I haven't seen her in ages.

I heard he had cancer. , but i don't know for sure. He had lost weight and was having a hard time breathing when I saw him last. He sure loved Reese Cups! I met him at KB Foods in Greensburg, Indiana where we both worked in the same department. We became good friends and looked out for each other. When he was off on a sick leave I visited him in May and I visited a couple weeks later on a Tuesday or Wednesday and he had just come home from the hospital that day. I had told him I would be back in a couple weeks but he passed in about a week. I was truly shocked. He was living in Connersville and I live in Shelbyville and I don't get over that way very often. His sister told me that he told her that I was the only true friend he had from KB. I was honored that he felt that way., Because I felt that way too. I just miss my friend.
