RE: Edmund Fontaine's military title
Hi Warren,

I don't consider you cranky at all! I find your input very helpful, and thank you for it.

First, let me say, I agree with your summery, but I will add that Col. Fontaine did contribute to the Confederate cause in a number of ways. It could be said that he played a vital part during the war and was recognized for that; in connection with the rail system in Virginia. Now how exactly he received his commission I do not know (again, I think you are correct in assuming due to his age, that he did receive it prior to the Civil War), but there is a good argument that he could have received it during the war. So until I can verify one way or the other, I just edited his bio and left it more ambiguous.

Just as an interesting footnote, I recently was in contact with Edmund Fontaine's 3 times great-grandsons and they have been very helpful in sharing information. The main topic of our conversations have been Edmund's son, Dr. John Fontaine.

Warren, thank you again, and I appreciate your interest and time in researching Edmund Fontaine.

All the best,

RE: Maria Louisa Shackleford Fontaine
Hi Warren,

Again, let me say, your information is most helpful. I'm sorry I have not had a chance to add and delete portions of Maria's bio, a current project that I have to present this week has consumed large portions of my time.

To keep down confusion, I have deleted the incorrect paternal name, and basically just copied and pasted a portion of the information you sent. I will work on this memorial in more detail in the next couple of days to week. I have cited you as the contributor of the information.

Can you give me some more information on the name Clough/Cluff you mentioned in your message? I am working on another project that concerns that surname and really have not been able to find much on it. My research has been on the Harris family and one of the daughters marries a Clough here in Hanover.

RE: Maria Louisa Shackleford Fontaine
Hi Warren,

Thank you for your message.

It really answers some questions that have puzzled me for quite awhile.

The info I have on Maria is from either the Va. Hist. Soc. or the Hanover Hist. Soc. I don't remember which one I got it from.

Maria and her husband were cousins, and I also knew that they were both cousins of Stuart's, but I just couldn't understand how. Yes, I knew Stuart had a Dabney/Winston connection so I understood how Edmund Fontaine must have been related to him, but I couldn't figure out Maria. So your message is very helpful to me!

I'm related to the Fontaines, the Winstons and the Dabneys so all of this is fascinating to figure out!

Thank you so much!
