Hans Jakob Gass Memorial# 102663797
Hi, and thanks again for your Find a Grave service. My apologies, I am not fluent in Find A Grave procedures. I just tonight discovered your Find A Grave message of 15 Jan 2014!

Regarding Jakob Gass, Sr. who twice served as prior for the male solitary cloister members at Ephrata under the name Brother Jethro, and died 12 Oct 1749. I request that "Hans" be dropped as his first name and that he be referred to as Jakob Gass.

The James Goodwill ship manifest & oath refers to him as Jakob Gass or Jakob Gass, Sr. (sick) and his son as Jakob Gass or Hans Jakob Gass. This son (born 1704 died 1764) also called Jakob Gass and sometimes referred to as Hans Jakob Gass. I think the fact that there were two Jakob Gasses on the Ship James Goodwill and as active participants in the Ephrata Cloister is the source of the confusion.

I have studied rather intensely these Jakob Gasses and have never seen the elder Jakob Gass referred to as Hans or Hans Jakob. If you have specific reference showing Hans as his first name please share it with me (

The father was Jakob aka Bro Jethro. The son, Jakob was sometimes called Hans Jakob known in the Ephrata Cloister as Brother Lamech. I descend from another son, Frederick 1701- 1778. My many grand great uncle Hans Jakob Gass has no known offspring.

This son was specifically referred to as Hans Jakob Gass in the Rothenfluh church record of his christening on 7 Dec 1704. Note, he had an older brother named Jakob Gass b 1695; it is believed he died prior to Hans Jakob's birth in 1704.

I think this is important because there is already confusion enough between the senior Jakob b 1667 and his son Jakob or Hans Jakob b 1704.

Frederick Goss, Sr. & Jr.
First thanks for your contributions to Find a Grave. I have particular interest in my Goss ancestors and have information that differs from your entries for the Frederick Goss father & son listings for Becks Union Church Cemetery, a few miles South of Lexington, NC.

The differences may be considered trivial to most folks; but I am deep into researching these two and want to explore whether you have sources that I am unaware of or have simply made minor mistakes or assumptions with which I disagree.

1) I am unaware of any sources specifically indicating the Frederick Goss b 1701 was buried in this cemetery or even died in NC (although it is quite possible that he is as other family members are known to be here). My source for his death are the "Ephrata Death Registers" specifically Brother Kenan's notebook in Ephrata, PA. I and others have assumed that he died at his son's home on Abbotts Creek not far from Becks Church but lacking further evidence, he could have died on a visit back to Ephrata. Also, my birth and death day of the month differ slightly from yours - this could just be birth vs christening and death vs burial.

2) Frederick Gass/Goss, Jr. was almost certainly born before 1738 and family tradition says he was born in Europe and therefore probably one of the three unnamed passengers in the Gass party on the ship James Goodwill arriving Philadelphia 27 Sep 1727. The reason 1738 is often used is only because he had to be 21 years old to show up on certain records on which his name appears in 1759. There is no other reason for this 1738 date than this that I know of.

Again, all of this is not a complaint. I just want to know if you have more information than I have.

I never use those family trees on ancestry... I might look at them for "hints", but I do my own research, certailnly before posting anything for others to see. The source of the date of birth and the parents of Maude Lynn Easley Hall is her application for a "Delayed Tennessee Birth Certificate" as well as tombstone and burial location in Rose Hill Cemetery in Fayetteville. (I am in Fayetteville, Tennessee.)

Thanks, Michael

It looked like the information about the beginning of Mr. Hall's memorial about his wife is not completely correct... I entered a memorial for her with correct dates and links to her parents.

RE: Hans Jakob Gass (or Goss) - (Memorial# 102663797)
Thank you. I did some research online and it seems that "God's Acre" is the name of the cemetery at the Ephrata Cloister. I requested Find A Grave to "merge" the two cemeteries and add that the cemetery is on W. Main Street. It will probably take a few days for Find A Grave to merge the cemeteries.
Thank you again for your quick response.

Hi! There was a photo request for this memorial. Do you have a exact location for the cemetery. I could not find a listing in the Lancaster County, PA book (published in 1993) for a cemetery with the name "God's Acre Cemetery".

Please remove your memorial for Joseph Wilson which you created in 2012, memorial # 100752893. It is a duplicate. The original was created in 2008, memorial #28342738. Thank you.

I found a Norwegian website that, as far as I can tell, lol, lists a rellie or two and their cemeteries. I have a friend who might be able to help with translations. I really haven't figured out how to manage the site: Let me know if you figure it out! The search engine worked the other day but it's not working for me now.
I'm delighted to find a listing on Find A Grave for what might be the same cemetery and I'm planning on adding my rellies as soon as I have a chance!

I saw that you had created a memorial in Orkdal Cemetery and I'm wondering if that is the same as Orkdalsmenighetene?

RE: Emma Eick Hall
Thanks for your message. I just wondered if you had any additional information on your aunt, Emma Eick Hall. I have been in contact with Wendell and even met Doug once. Seems that I knew more about their mother's family than they did. (Which isn't much!) She was my grandfather's sister.

I don't know. Why do you think this? You may know more about this family than I do.

No, I'm not related. I live close to this cemetery and thought I'd take some photos that might help someone somewhere seeking more info. My family is mostly Irish & German. This website has been so much of a help to me, I thought I really should give something back.

Ragna Hall

I uploaded a couple gravestone photos of records you manage. The second one, Ragna E. Hall has a birth date that doesn't match the record. Maybe it's just a typo? Record says 1899, but the stone says 1889.
