The Frews of Paradise (Pa)
Hi Shana,
My family (Benner) has known the Frews for at least 5 generations. My gg-grandfather Amos M. Benner, served with William C. Frew in Co.D 2nd Pennsylvania Volunteer Cavalry in the civil war. They were both captured at Occuquan, Va, on Dec. 28, 1862. After the war they both took up residence in Paradise, Pa. Have been researching their civil war unit. Much info to share. Do you have the article from "250 Years in Paradise, Pa." Written by Berle Frew - 1962 ? I will e-mail you a copy if you need it.
Best Wishes,
Glenn

RE: Norma Gardner
Evie married Etheridge in 1955. It is possible that the marriage Licenses has her parents listed. It would seem that the census and that marriage information should confirm her parents. It sure would help if there was a marriage license back when she married Levy but not being able to find their marriage in Montgomery and not having any idea where they married doesn't help.
Will try to think of something else that can help. Glad you are doing better. Merry Christmas!

RE: Norma Gardner
I don't know how many death certificates you need or marriage licenses, or divorce decrees, etc. It is my understanding that death certificates can be order on line with a credit card. I had a first cousin that ordered our grandmother and grandfather's death certificates on my mother's side of the family. Of course they had been dead for over forty years. Since Aunt Kate, Evie, and Majorie all died since 1985 the laws may be different. I do not believe a genealogist's can obtain what a family member cannot obtain. The last I heard death certificates cost $20 or $25 a piece. I don't know what the probate office would charge for marriage licenses and divorce decrees and then you would need to know where they married, etc. Have you checked with Elaine Lewis to see if her mother had a copy of Aunt Kate's death certificate. Does your mother not have a copy of her mother's death certificate or maybe Kathleen or Laura. Maybe Linda Gardner has a copy of some of these documents. If I can be of further help, let me know.

RE: Norma Gardner
Evie and Levy were born before birth certificates were required in AL. The first birth certificates required were in 1916 and some of those are rare.
You should be able to use Levy's WW I Draft Registration Card with his birth date.
Did they not list Evie's mother as Katie Stoddard on her death certificate?

RE: Norma Gardner
Shana, you will not be able to get bith cerificates on them as they were born before 1916 - no? As for death certificates, you should be able to obtain them. It may take some round about way of saying you are obtaining them for someone closer to Levy and Evie. If I can help let me know.

RE: Norma Gardner
Look for Ruby Elmira Smith and it should go from there. If not type in Charles Steagall Smith. It will show him with census from Tuckers, Montgomery, AL. Don't know why it woulde not pull it up unless it is because I am still alive.
You can also put in Nathan Fenn Stoddard in Alabama and then go to Trees and you will see Smith Family.

RE: Norma Gardner
Martha Christian was born in VA - have not come across actual documents of her parents.
The confusing part to alot of people is that our Great Grandfather Nathan Fenn was actual Nathan Fenn, Jr. Looking at Martha's tombstone at Ebenezer - it states she is the wife of N. F. Stoddard, Sr. Nathan Fenn Sr. is buried at Rocky Head in Dale Co., AL. I have photo's of his tombstone.
The 1850 Census for Dale Co., AL plainly states Nathan Stoddard as head of household with a son named Nathan Fenn who is 4 or 5 years of age. I have had a person to tell me that I have incorrect information on this but I have found out that she does not know how to read a census. That's okay. She also has a problem reading lineage spreadsheets.
Another area in our Stoddard lineage is that it splits with a double lineage of Stoddard's settling in historical Wethersfield back through National Foote and Peck's who settled Hartford, CT. There is a monuement with Deacon Paul Peck's name on it in Hartford.
Wish I could go to the Cromartie Reunion with you. Let me know how it goes.
If you are interested in joining the Mayflower Society, let me know. Will be glad to turn your name into the registrar of the Society for membership. You would only have to prove yourself, mother, Marjorie, Evie, and Aunt Katie as my grandmother's sister which the censuses show them as siblings. I also have where Aunt Katie stated on a delated birth certificate that she was sister to my grandmother.

RE: Norma Gardner
I think that may have had something to do with it. Also the end of the war, records were not that accurate. As for James S. Tucker who is our XXX grandfather his estate settlement was about 1858 so I know for a fact he did not die in 1871 as so many records indicate. His wife Elizabeth died shortly after 1860 as I also have her estate settlement. This has helped in closing in on their actual death dates.

If you go to Norma Jean's mother you will see all 3 sister's listed as Evie and Leavy Barnes daughters. Other than going to each sister and writing a bio of their sister's there are no links. Are you Marjorie's granddaughter?
