Stephen Smith
Hi Donna - I assume you are interested in Stephen Smith, Sr. What I have is from a history of Fairfield Co. SC as follows:

Stephen Smith Sr. came to South Carolina from England with his wife Margaret and four Children. In accordance with a precept issued on August 6, 1765, one hundred acres of land was surveyed for William Goof on Big Cedar Creek on September 18, 1765. On May 5, 1772, and on orders from Council, this land was certified for Stephen Smith. The land lay where the creek makes a double loop to form the letter "S," andjust before Big Cedar Creek. The old Stephen Smith house stands on this land, on a high bluff, to the west of Big Cedar Creek. This house has more recently become known as the old Doctor Lever Place and is now owned by Clyde Lever, a descendant of Stephen Smith. The old Smith burying ground is in the bottom lands across Big Cedar Creek from the old home. On one old field stone, the letters M S has been scratched. (Probably Molly Smith, wife of Andrew Smith). A path to the Kinslers crosses this land at the point of the deepest loop.

Hope this is the data you are interested in. - Bob Leitner

Hi. I see that you've talked with Linda. Similarly, I've found no positive indication of burial. I did find some city directory matches: In 1931, Jas. S. Wester lived at 2310 1st Av, Columbus with spouse Wilma. He's listed as an electrician. Wilma appears in the 1940 census in PC, AL as head of household, married not widowed.

In 1945, a J. Wester is in Columbus with spouse "Mamie" and in 1946, Mary.

RE: pheonix city community cemetary
hi, donna,
James Sellers Wester remains elusive. I checked for an obituary in both the morning and evening newspapers between Jun 25, 1949 to Jul 31, 1949. There was no obituary or any listing of death that I could find.

I checked the city directories from 1936-1951 and did not find James Wester listed. I did find Minnie F and Charles E Wester listed 3/4 times (buried in Ladonia Baptist Ch. Cemetery), an Otha (and Blanche) Wester listed once, Daniel Wester listed twice, and Estell Wester listed once. No James S Wester found. I found in a record of burials a Brady Self Wester, buried in Hurtsboro AL. Also a Blakely Quinn Wester buried in Lakeview Cemetery (PC AL).

I checked ancestry for him and did find a military record for a James S Wester enlistment on 16 Oct 1903 in Jacksonville FL (home in Cedar Key); he was discharged without honor on 17 Nov 1903 in Jacksonville. I don't know if that is him.

I'm not sure where else to look at this point. Wish I had better news for you. Linda
