RE: James Basil Newman Find A Grave Memorial# 42866215
Rita!

Your inquiry made me investigate, a little further.

I just found the 1880 US Census where James Basil Newman and his children were living in ED 203, Union, Mississippi, USA...and, he is a widower, there.

So, I'm assuming, then, that the documentation I had stating that Leonidas B. & Lenore Onanna (Ona) Newman (Martin) were both born in Texas were erroneous.

So, now we know that Martha had to have passed away sometime between when Ona, their youngest, was born (1878) and 1880 (when the census shows James as a widower....and, the census, being in Mississippi, would indicate that she probably passed away in Mississippi!

Had to share....

I'll keep digging! Let me know if you find something, ok? I'll do the same!

"Talk" to YOU, SOON!!

RE: James Basil Newman Find A Grave Memorial# 42866215
Hi, Rita! Nice to meet relatives! :)

James Basil (Jim) Newman was my great great grandfather. His son, Thomas Wiley was my great grandfather. My grandfather was James Leon (Lonnie) Newman, son of Thomas Wiley Newman & Lou Burge Newman (Tom's first wife).

I have found three different references to Jim's birthplace: South Carolina, Georgia, & Mississippi. I tend to lean towards South Carolina. I haven't found any solid documentation (i.e. birth certificate of any kind, etc.) that confirms this, though.

Martha Mize Newman was my great great grandmother.

According to birthplaces listed in census for Jim & Martha's youngest two children I've found, to-date, she had to have passed away here in Texas (as I show their next-to-youngest child, Leonidus B. (Lee) Newman, was born here in Texas per 1910 US Census in Bessmay, Jasper, Texas, USA). So, if Lee was born in Texas about 1875, then Martha had to have made it to Texas with Jim before her passing. I have made assumption, then, that their youngest child I've found (L. Ona Newman - I believe her first name may have been Lenore) was also, then, born in Texas. (L.) Ona Newman Martin was, according to her F-A-G memorial and tombstone, born about 1878.

This narrows the time period of Martha Jane E. Mize Newman's death to sometime after 1878 and 1900, as that is the next census I've found James Basil (Jim) in Titus, Texas living with his son, Stacey Alexander and his family.

Since the Newmans lived, primarily in that time period, in Titus County, Texas, I would imagine this is where Martha is buried - most likely in Gladewater Cemetery or Greenhill Presbyterian Church Cemetery. James Basil lived in Titus County, Texas, from 1900 until his death (at least as far as all documentation that I've been able to find - i.e., census and death record information). In the 1900 census, he is listed a widowed.

But, the short answer to your question is, unfortunately: no. I've tried and tried to find ANY information on her death date and burial information and she has been illusive to me, since day-one. :(

I will continue to research and will be happy to share, when / if I find anything solid and factual.

Feel free to browse my cemeteries for other information, or ask. I just recently broke further into the Mize family (finally worked my way 'round!) I'll be happy to share whatever I've found!

Hope you have a WONDERFUL rest of the weekend!

HUGS to my NEW CUZ!! :) I saw your name on many of the memorials I've been leaving flowers on.

TAKE CARE!
