RE: Regina Wentz O'Dell
VJ Litton,

Regina Wentz-O'Dell was my great-grandmother. I put her in the Harkins Cemetery simply on a family rumor she was buried there. I never could find her death certificate to verify this. Harkins is where her son Robert Friel (my grandfather) is buried, therefore I thought he may have bought a plot there for her. I never knew she had re-married after Georges' death. There was not much documentation on her. I corrected this on the find a grave site and placed her at the Kanawha County Ward Cemetery. If this is not correct please advise.

RE: Mary Caroline Sauls Stewart-Meadows-Jackson

No, the Elijah that past in 1929 is not the one married to your Mary Sauls - he is Richard's son. The Elijah that was married to Mary Sauls is memorial# 140151112 - he died in 1932 and he is Richard's brother.

In the spring, when I come up there he's one that I am going to formally document the location of. He's buried on his old family property. The headstone is supposed to have a picture of him on it so I'm looking forward to seeing and documenting that.

The relationship between Elijah and Mary to me is very questionable. It must have been an on and off kind of relationship as they married in 1897, weren't together in 1900 but in 1902 they had Florida and by 1910 they weren't together again....

I didn't find all of Florida's kids but I got a couple of em and one of Mary's sisters too if I remember correctly with this last perusal. I'll work on one for a bit and then go back and hit them again after the changes have went through till i get it as far as I feel like I can.

I'm working on my side of the family from Jeremiah Preston Meadows down. Jeremiah Preston is Richard's father.

As far as how fast they go through that depends on the users and can be up to 30 days before they just flow through without interference.

Have you been to Mary's grave by chance?

Thanks for your help!!

Best regards,
Keith Meadows

RE: Mary Caroline Sauls Stewart-Meadows-Jackson

Thanks for the feedback!!

I'm working on the Meadows side and was trying to get pictures of all of the wives. There were actually 3 Elijah Prestons. One was my GGG Grandfathers son, one was my GGG grandfathers brother and another goes well back in the family tree.

I take every opportunity that I can to try to find pictures of folks and try to get them in here for just the reason that you mentioned. When pictures aren't documented, people who own them pass on and they're left to other generations who if they even bother to keep them don't know who they are.... Every now and then I hit a gold mine on pictures..

I've done the edits for a ton of information on these folks if I didn't add them from scratch. I found several more last night and linked more to Mary as well as Florida.

Do you happen to know how long Elijah and Mary were actually married? If you look at the census info it doesn't look like for long.

Thanks again for your help!

Best regards,
Keith Meadows

Mary Caroline Sauls Stewart-Meadows-Jackson

I noticed that you had put a flower out there on Jacob Stewarts' memorial and that you were his great grandson - I was wondering if you had a picture of him, Mary Sauls or Florida Faye??

Thanks for your help!!!

RE: Thank you for transfer
I'm glad to hear the O'Dell Cemetery is in good hands, and it sounds like it will be safe for a long time. I have been trying to do some genealogical research on my family off and on over the years, but I didn't have much luck until recently. The WV State Div. of Culture has a Vital Records Research page, and they have been uploading scanned images of the original birth, marriage, and death records for all of the counties. They have misspelled the names for some of the links to the images, but being able to search these records has made a big difference in my success rate!

I hope to get all of my research organized into a format that I can present to my first cousins (5 living who are related to the Mayes), so they or their children/grandchildren (20+ people among them at the last count) can build on what I found. I think it would be good for your family to be able to contact my family, and vice-versa, just in case. Most of my Mayes-related cousins are in the Hurricane to Huntington area, so they're not far away.

My personal email is mlfriery[at]

By the way, I don't know who decided that Alice Linkfield's first name was Melissa; that's a fairly modern name. Her birth record shows her given name only as Alice, and her mother's name was Mary. I think it is more likely that she was known in life as "Mary Alice."

Thank you for transfer
Thank you for transferring Mr. & Mrs. Mayes to my account. I found the location of the cemetery using Google Maps, and I see it is only a few feet off of Dutch Ridge Rd. I would like to give my contact information to the owners of the cemetery in case something happens, and the bodies need to be moved to a different cemetery. An incident like this happened in the Barboursville area when the local government exercised Immanent Domain in order to obtain land for a new school. A cemetery was on the land, and people had to claim their relatives and move them. Do you know who owns or manages the O'Dell Cemetery?

P.L. Mayes & M.A. Mayes (O'Dell Cemetery) Correction
I missed a section of my notes, so the information I gave you in my first message is not correct.

Phillip Lewis Mayes and Melissa Alice (Linkfield) Mayes were the parents of Loranza L. Mayes (11/7/1873 - 5/1/1958). Loranza L. Mayes married Lydia Jane (Ruby) Mayes ((5/18/1876 - 7/22/1959). Loranza and Lydia had 13 children, the youngest of whom was Ada Wilma (Mayes) Hardin (2/4/1899 - 8/9/1990), my grandmother.

Loranza L. Mayes, Lydia Jane (Ruby) Mayes, and Ada Wilma (Mayes) Hardin are all buried in Cunningham Memorial Park in St. Albans, Kanawha Co., WV, as are a great number of other members of the family.

I apologize for missing the note about Loranza L. Mayes.

P.L. Mayes & M.A. Mayes (O'Dell Cemetery)
I am writing to ask you to transfer the records of P.L. Mayes and M.A. Mayes to me because they are my maternal great-grandparents. Their names are Phillip Lewis Mayes and Melissa Alice (Linkfield) Mayes. They had 13 children, the youngest of whom was Ada Wilma (Mayes) Hardin (2/4/1899 - 8/9/1990), my grandmother, who is buried in Cunningham Memorial Park in St. Albans, Kanawha Co., WV.

Also, I am a new member of the site, so I don't know how the transfer of records works.

RE: Minnie Florence Mace Taylor Westfall
Yes, she is one of my ancestors but much more distantly than she is to you by far. In parlance: she is the aunt of the wife of the nephew of the husband of the first cousin of the second husband of one of my first great grand aunts (or, as they say, the wife of one of my first great grand uncles [Floyd Washington Joseph Dodd - one of the brothers of my great grandfather, John Henry Dodd, and one of the nine children of my second great grandfather, John Snyder Dodd]. I suppose you might think that she shouldn't be important to me but ALL of my ancestors are important to me (of course not as much so as my dear paternal grandmother, 'Granny' [Cora 'Dale' Dodd Sloniger], with whom I lived for a few years when I escaped the hell of the home in which I lived with my three siblings at the hands of my step-mother and biological father. She was so very dear to me, more like a friend than a grandmother. So you see, any lineage that stems from her family is extremely important to me. Please forgive me if I am treading on sensitive toes. That is certainly not my intent. I'm a stickler for accuracy and right versus wrong and I often am known to stick my neck out to try and see that the rules that were established are carried out. I am not one that believes that "rules are meant to be broken." Quite the contrary. Driving down the road, if the speed limit sign says '45', I expect all the drivers to travel at that speed (congestive traffic and traffic lights permitting, that is), not 35 or 40 or 50 or 55. But then that's just me - an old stick in the mud. Sorry for such a long diatribe! Judi

You shouldn't use the hyphen anyway. That would make it appear like she was a more modern woman of today and, when she married the second time, decided to keep her first married surname and hyphenate it while adding the second married surname, which I rather doubt that she did.

I had no idea, of course, that you purchased the stone and had both married surnames etched into the stone yourself. However, family squabbles aside, Find A Grave rules must be adhered to, that's all that I'm trying to say, and, since you did have both married surnames etched into her grave marker monument, you have no alternative but to include both surnames on the memorial. Her name should read exactly the way you have it typed in your "RE:" subject line. I'm sorry for your family members that will be upset or furious but rules are established to be followed. Judi

The Given Cemetery is locked all the time. All of my siblings have a key, plus the person who cuts the grass. You might try the funeral home who had her funeral. I bet Hafer Funeral Home, might have a key. I'm not sure if they handled her funeral or not. Kimberly's burial site is in the very back of the cemetery on the far right. There is a slight downward slope in that back area of the cemetery. The cemetery road was paved just about a year ago. God bless and good luck. Rosa AKA L. Given

I took a photo of her tombstone, will try to find it. God bless Rosa

That cemetery is in Rockview. I don't know why it shows up as Oceana unless it's because it's halfway between Pineville and there. I have been there as well.

RE: Winona O'Dell
If you know where they are buried, go ahead and make a memorial for them. If you aren't sure on which cemetery, there is a way to leave that section blank. I live in Putnam County and need to go back there too. Most of my people are buried in just about every cemetery between Witcher Creek and Falls View...both sides of the river, on most of the mountains, and up some of the "hollars".

I transferred Winona to you. I'm still posting pictures I took at the Ward Cemetery. I'm behind on my pictures. I've been trying to catch up since it's gotten so cold. If I run across any other O'Dells I'll let you know. I need to go back out there when the weather is a little better.
